Perry Branch Library is revving up for its second year of an innovative reading program designed to pair Perry High School student athletes with students in kindergarten through third grade.
CheeREADERS, which began this month and runs through December, is designed to get kids excited about reading during the school year. While coaching younger kids to read better, the athletes earn community service credit for their efforts.
“We have more than 40 teen athletes signed up for this program,” says Perry Branch teen supervisor Allison Burke. “Our immediate goal now is to enlist more young readers in the program from Perry High’s feeder elementary schools.”
Youth Young readers benefit from teen-athlete coaches
CheeREADERS are scheduled to tutor the early readers on a variety of Tuesday dates during the school year. The teen volunteers coach the early readers one-on-one for about 20 minutes per session. Each teen can help up to three elementary students during their 1.5- to two-hour shift.
From an engagement perspective, the program is very
fl exible. The child and the athlete can select a book to read, or the child can choose one. The student can choose to read to the athlete or have the athlete read to him or her. They can also decide to each take turns reading. According to Burke, there is a direct link between reading and achievement in school.
“Through this effort we are trying to get kids excited
about reading by including positive role models – teen athletes – in this reading discovery process.” Burke noted that the program could not have moved forward without collaboration from Perry High School athletic coaches and PHS Athletic Director Marcus Williams.
The 2010 dates for the program are Aug. 10 and 24, Sept. 14 and 28, Oct. 26, Nov. 9 and Dec. 14. Young readers are slotted into one of three 20-minute reading sessions between 4 and 5 p.m. Registration is not required for elementary student participants.
