Celebrated Western artist exhibits at CCA


“Merrill Mahaffey the Artist’s Perspective: 50 Years in the West,” an exhibit of works by renowned Western artist Merrill Mahaffey, is on display Sept. 3 through Oct. 30 at Chandler Center for the Arts, with an artist’s reception from 7 to 9 p.m. Fri., Sept. 10.

Cowboy Craft Fairs to Gilbert


Four new fall arts and craft fairs are held at the Gilbert Rodeo Park, featuring local artists, crafters and food vendors at each.


The fairs, all on Saturdays, run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 11, Oct. 9, Nov. 6 and Dec. 4.

The National Youth Theatre Awards ceremony is at 7:30 p.m. Sun., Sept. 12 at Valley Youth Theatre in Phoenix, and the ariZoni Theatre Awards of Excellence ceremony is at 5:30 p.m. Mon., Sept. 20 at the Tempe Center for the Arts. EVCT received National Youth Theatre awards in the categories of Acting, Costume Design, Lighting Design and Set Design, and further nominations for Acting, Costume Design and New Play.


The theatre received ariZoni nominations for all three of its productions, “The Jungle Book, “The Goats Gruff” and “The Enchantment of Beauty and the Beast” in the categories of Overall Production, Director, Set Design, Light Design, Costume Design, Sound Design and Hair and Makeup Design. In addition, several young East Valley actors earned nominations for their acting skills. EVCT’s upcoming season includes performances of “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever,” “Puss ‘n Boots” and “The Adventures of Pinocchio.”

Burns It Up holds auditions at new home


SanTan Sun area youths are invited to audition for Burns It Up, a performing group founded and directed by Fox Crossing resident Karen Burns. Auditions are held by appointment on Sat., Aug. 21 at the troupe’s new location at Center Pointe Dance in Ahwatukee.


Each participant should come prepared with a monologue and short song emphasizing vocal strengths. Brief choreography will be learned during the audition.


Burns It Up’s new location offers expanded acting and musical theatre classes for ages 5 and older, including ballet, jazz, contemporary, tap, hip-hop and tumbling. The school features professional dance fl oors and space large enough to hold community theatrical productions. Burns It Up is a positive, creative, nonprofi t organization offering classes for children and adults, as well as three performance companies that include dancers, singers and actors and perform at various venues and events across Phoenix Center Pointe Dance is located at 4825 E. The upcoming season includes performances by the Phoenix Symphony, Arizona Ballet, Arizona Opera and Arizona Theatre Company, as well as events at Herberger and Orpheum Theatres in Phoenix, and Coffee Classics at Symphony Hall. The season kicks off with the opening of the Phoenix Symphony Concert Series, a performance of Brahms’ Violin Concerto and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 “Pathetique,” at 7:30 p.m. Thu., Sept. 16.
