FROM FIELD TO PLATE
Surrey Farm and Food Week, now in it its ninth year, is a well- established part of the farming calendar. The initiative, started by the Surrey County Agricultural Society, encourages farmers to open up their farms and get to know their neighbours and potential customers.
There is a wealth of food grown and produced in Surrey, from beef, pork and lamb, to flour, eggs, fruit and dairy products, and the theme for this year is the journey from field to plate.
The walks and other events, many followed by home-produce BBQs, produce sales and refreshments aim to illustrate just this. Visit Flanchford Farm in Reigate (Sep 20) to see all the beef cattle, the historic watermill and mill ponds, then taste ice-cream made on St Joan’s Farm next door. On Sep 22, The Parrot at Forest Green is holding a butchery demonstration evening with lots of opportunities to sample food prepared from meat from the home farm in the pub’s delicatessen. See the website for a full list of events. Surrey Farm and Food Week, Sept 18–26. For advance tickets and
