| Editor’s Welcome |

“This has been a fun and cathartic process for me… It’s given me a chance to reflect on my career in this business and the many joys—past, present, and future—involved.” That was a com- ment by J Madden that I quoted last April in the “Editor’s Welcome” in introducing CBI Unbound.

Past: Madden, who, among other things, is the owner of the Pura Vida Fitness and Spa in Denver, was reflecting on what it had been like to be interviewed, in depth, for a feature in that issue of the magazine (see “Upbeat in a Downbeat Economy,” pg. 30). I observed that, as much as that article had had to say, there

was so much more we could have shared about Madden and his business—material, I suggested, that might be fit fodder for an entry in the new blog, CBI Unbound, we were launching that month. Well, Madden never became a blog post, but, since then,

dozens of individuals, and clubs, and topics have. New install- ments of CBI Unbound are posted three times each week, on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and, if you haven’t checked any of them out, you’re missing out on some really fine writing—interesting, intelligent, insightful, and often inspiring. I can say that because I have practically noth-

ing at all to do with CBI Unbound. CBI Editor Jennifer H. McInerney is in charge of the project, and our staff and contributors provide the impressive content. Among my favorite entries are: “Rehab: The

Great Equalizer,” Contributing Editor Jon Feld’s account of his stepson’s experience with physical rehabilitation (May 24); “Ghosts of Health Clubs Past: Weighing the Value Proposition,” Jen’s explanation of why she decided to trade her old

club for a new one (June 9); and “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Fitness,” Associate Editor Mia Coen’s piece on fitness in underserved communities (June 25). All can still be read by logging on to http://cbiunbound.ihrsa.org.

Present: Today’s blog post, “Comic Relief: Homer on Exercise” (July 28) features a video clip of the star of The Simpsons encoun- tering the world of health clubs for the first time, and includes a hilarious cartoon impression of Arnold Schwarzenegger. Last April, I’d told you that CBI Unbound would “by turns, be serious, introspective, dramatic, provocative, and, occasionally, even humorous,” and we’re attempting to make good on that promise.

Future: Among the topics that have been penciled in for blog treatment in the months to come are ones on: a class in which participants perform yoga poses on surfboards; the Namaste Charter School, a national leader when it comes to exercise and nutrition education; and Dr. Michelle Segar, who argues that exercise needs to be marketed differently.
