CBI: What physical benefits does golf offer?

GN: Golf quietly provides an excellent workout. The governing bodies of the sport, such as the PGA of America and the USGA, have begun doing more thorough studies of the positive impact of golf on health and physical fitness, and some impressive stats are begin- ning to emerge. In fact, it was recently reported that an average individual who plays 18 holes of golf (walking, not riding a cart) can burn 1,500 calo-

Champions Tour, as well. It’s become a part of life as a touring professional.

CBI: How are golf and fitness interconnected? How has that connection changed over the past few generations of golfers?

GN: The technology behind the golf club continues to advance, and so, too, must the players’ physique. When you have a physically fit body, you’re able to achieve greater distance and control of your ball flight.

yes, but the ultimate goal is building a company to a level at which, after you hit that time period—15 or 20 years, or whatever it is—you can really take advantage of what you’ve achieved. So I created Great White Shark

Enterprises—a multinational corpora- tion with a diverse portfolio that includes apparel, wine, beef, restaurants, event management, golf course design, and real estate development.

CBI: How about the Greg Norman Golf Foundation? What purpose does it serve?

ries during their round. You can run as fast as you can on a treadmill for 30 minutes, exerting all kinds of energy, and not even come close to burning 1,500 calories.

CBI: Tell us about the Fitness Trailer program for the PGA TOUR.

GN: I started the Fitness Trailer program on the PGA TOUR in 1990. My trainer, Pete Draovitch, and I designed the first Fitness Trailer and encouraged the TOUR to get CYBEX involved because I was a firm believer in the company’s technology. In speaking with the TOUR, we discussed its responsibility to provide its members with a fitness program that would give them the option of working out. When we first created the Fitness Trailer, I was one of the only players using it, but now, you can barely find space; there are three or four trailers on the PGA TOUR, and trailers on the

CBI: Tell us a little about your own enterprises (Great White Shark Enterprises; Medalist and Southern Cross Development; Australian Grille; Greg Norman Australian Prime; Greg Norman Estates (wine); Greg Norman Collection; Greg Norman Production Com- pany; and Greg Norman Golf Course Design).

GN: I wanted to get involved with businesses, not just do endorsement deals. The plan was twofold: I wanted to structure my business interests in such a way that, after I stopped playing golf, I’d have something to move toward that I’d enjoy. Second, I wanted to structure them in such a way that the fruits of my energies weren’t tied to a three-year or five-year endorsement. I wanted my business interests

directed toward putting money back into a company, and seeing it continue to grow. You want a dividend return,

GN: The Foundation’s aim is to cultivate the best players by promoting the very highest standards for junior golf; prepare young golfers for the future; and bring professional golf tuition within the reach of interested individuals in Queensland, Australia. Many outstand- ing junior golfers have benefited from the Foundation, the most notable being Karrie Webb, Adam Scott, and Jason Day. As a point of pride, two weeks ago, Adam and Jason both won in back-to- back weeks on the PGA TOUR, winning the Valero Texas Open and the HP Byron Nelson Championship, respectively.
