London July 27-August 12, and the Para- lympic Games, August 29-September 9. “The needs of athletes are always at


the forefront of our thinking, and, so, ensuring we have top-of-the-range equipment available for their use is vital,” explains Sebastian Coe, the chair- man of the London Games. “Technogym comes to us with some fantastic pre- Games experience, and will help us to ensure that the needs of all competitors at London 2012 are met.”

750 pieces of equipment for a main gym, located in the Athletes’ Village, as well as for several gyms in other training and competition venues. In the past, the company has been a sponsor for the Summer Olympic Games at Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, and for the Torino 2006 Winter Games. “This important achievement


represents a victory for the whole Technogym team,” says Nerio Alessandri, the founder and president of the company. “We’re very proud to have been chosen for the fifth time as the official supplier of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Richard “Duke” Llewellyn, 93, an abiding feature of the Los Angeles Athletic Club (LAAC) for 54 years, died of congestive heart failure at the Hollenbeck Palms rehabilitation center in Los Angeles, and, a few hours later, John R. Wooden, 99, the legendary UCLA basketball coach, passed away at the UCLA Medical Center. In 1976, Llewellyn, concerned


that Wooden’s remarkable legacy of 10 national championships in 12 seasons would soon be forgotten, given his recent retire- ment, conceived of, and created,

the John R. Wooden Player of the Year Award. The honor, presented each year to the best all-around male and female college players, is the basketball equivalent of football’s Heisman Award. The two men remained close


friends thereafter. Llewellyn, himself an accom-


plished college and professional athlete, joined LAAC in 1956,
