Hudson Seniors Get Caught Between a Rock and a Hard Place – Literally by Doug Robinson
Hudson Seniors have once again been caught between a rock and a hard place, as the “town fathers” cannot seem to get it right with the building of a senior for Hudson Seniors. For months, Hudson has been awaiting word from the New Hampshire Department of Transportation (DOT) in response to their request to build a Senior Center on the Benson property. New Hampshire Governor John Lynch, on a visit to Hudson, visited the park and stated that he would do what he could to assist Hudson with the building of a Senior Center. However, at a recent meeting between Board of Selectmen Chairman Ken Massey, Selectman Rick Maddox, Town Engineer Gary Webster, Deputy Fire Chief Rob Buxton, and the seniors, it was learned that neither of the two proposed sites would be buildable until the steep grading issue and the concern with the ledge were addressed. The two plans that have been drawn for a new Senior Center
Nixle
Information Service
Coming to Hudson
by Doug Robinson The Hudson Fire
Department is in the process of incorporating the Nixle Information System as an Emergency Management tool for Hudson, writes Deputy Fire Chief Robert Buxton to the Hudson Board of Selectmen. The Board came to a consensus vote approving that the Fire Department proceed and report back to the Board at a later date with more information about Nixle. Consumer information
provided by Nixle states that Nixle is a service that allows you to receive trusted, up-to-date neighborhood information for where you live, work, and visit, or for where your family and friends are located throughout the country. The service is at no cost to you, but standard text messaging rates apply. You choose the information you want, for the locations you want, from urgent public safety alerts to less time-sensitive advisories and community information. You choose how you want
to receive the information, whether it is over your cell phone by text message, by e-mail, or over the web, claims Nixle. The Nixle Information System is a secure, identity-certified, and trusted communication platform that allows official agencies and organizations to send you geographically relevant information. The technology allows for these agencies to communicate with you in a trusted way using their secure publishing tools. Similar to reverse 911,
where emergency public information is called to phone users, “Nixle is a community information service that provides real- time, credible information to the community,” according to Buxton. “It is similar to other social media systems such as Twitter or Facebook. The system is different in the sense that it only allows for information to be sent out from authorized users.” Buxton further stated that the system is broken down into four components: alerts affecting the town, town- wide advisories, community information, and traffic. The cost of the Nixle system will be absorbed by the users and will not cost the taxpayers any revenue or cost increases to their taxes. Subscribers to the service would receive their information on their cell phone, smartphone, or in their e-mail.

within the Benson property include one location being to the left of the main entrance directly against the hill, and the second location being to the right of the main entrance to the park. In meeting with the Town Engineer and the Fire Department, it
was learned that there is a significant ledge in the ground on both sites. The ledge would create a problem with the construction of the building, as the ledge would have to be removed for a proper foundation to be placed. In addition, the Fire Department advised the parties that the
entrance to the park was too steep for their equipment to use. As Burns Hill Road is 16 feet higher than the level of the parking lot, the entrance way will have to be redesigned to comply with town regulations, which require a road grade of no more than seven degrees. “We do not know what is there,” said Maddox. “It could be ledge and it needs to be resolved before we go any further. We would like
to get some test pits done and then make a decision.” Chairman Massey commented that there are issues with both
trucks and the slopes. “The issue with the test pits is critical. That will determine if the site can be made,” he said. Selectman Shawn Jasper, should the Board notify the NH DOT, commented that he “was left with the impression that the Governor’s legal counsel was waiting for us” and that he was unsure if anything is happening. “As we have not heard from them, let the sleeping dogs lie. The ledge is important, especially the utilities,” he said. The enthusiasm has been building with the thought that after
years of life without a Senior Center, Hudson would finally have one. But unfortunately, once again, due to a lack of preparation and planning on the part of Hudson’s Board of Selectmen with regards to developing and implementing the full scope for the building of a Senior Center, the Hudson Seniors will remain at the Community Center until further notice.
