As summer winds down, it means fewer backyard barbe- cues, shorter days, and most of all, kids headed back to school. The transition from summer to school can be daunting for any parent and each year it seems the to-do list gets longer. Lisa Gurry, one of Working Mother Magazine’s 2009 Moms of the Year, has some ideas with the help of Bing.com that can make it a bit more manageable this fall. Her tips are: * Back-to-school shopping:

Every school requires certain school supplies and most kids love the process of choosing the perfect new backpack or lunch- box. Some online sites, like Bing. com, offer comparison shopping tools that make it easy for you to find everything you need at a great price and get it shipped to your house, beating the crowds. * Pantry stock-up: Before the school year gets under-

way be sure to stock up on all of the essential pantry staples (snacks, desserts, PB&J, etc.) so you will be prepared to pack a great lunch at a moment’s notice. Having well-stocked cupboards will help streamline your morning routine and by planning ahead you will be able to get the best prices on all your goods. * Centralize the essentials: Don’t let things get lost in the shuffle. Turn your home’s coat closet or mud room into a school prep station so everyone knows where to find lunch boxes, backpacks, coats, etc., so when the morning rush to eat, dress and brush teeth has the household frenzied you can still make it out the door on time with everything you need for the day in hand. Check out www.bing.com/images to view some great design ideas.

* Avoid the jam: If you run late, your kids run late. Before you leave to take your child to school or to after school activities like sports, music or dance classes, use mapping and traffic applications to find the best route to avoid traffic, so your kids aren’t stressing out about missing anything important from the things they enjoy. * The back-up plan: Even the most prepared par- ent hits a snag once in a while. Realizing half-way to school the lunch box is on the kitchen counter or the gym shoes are at a friend’s house can ruin a child’s day. A handy mobile application for making mid-route stops is www.bing.com/maps. This application allows you to use your phone to easily find the closest grocery or discount chain to pick up what you need in a hurry and keep you from missing your 9 a.m. meeting at work.

Tools to make back-to-school supplies a little lighter

The school bell will soon ring

for your children, whether they’re boarding the elementary school bus or unloading a car full of furnish- ings into their tiny college dorm room. Before their classes begin and assignments start rolling in, make sure they have everything they need to succeed during the school year. Parents often voice the same two

concerns when checking items off their back-to-school shopping lists. “How will my children stay orga- nized during the school year?” and “How heavy will their backpacks be?” Luckily, technology is available

to ease both concerns. Sure, note- books and folders are still important school supplies, and textbooks are a must, but class projects now rely on computer programs just as much as loose-leaf paper. Instead of load- ing materials into a crammed back- pack, students can stay organized and lighten their load using simple and affordable storage solutions. “It’s a busy back-

to-school season once the class supply lists are sent home,” said Bob O’Keefe, vice president, retail marketing, SanDisk.

“Parents are already hard at work trying to save money, yet still pro- vide their children with everything they need for a great school year.” If your children need convenient

portable storage at an affordable price, then SanDisk Cruzer USB Flash Drives found at Walmart offer a perfect solution. The drives are available in different storage ca- pacities to suit the workloads of dif- ferent grade levels, and they come in a variety of colors such as Blue Morpho or Competitive Orange. A helpful suggestion for keeping your child organized—complement the flash drive color to each subject’s

folder or notebook so that nothing gets mixed up. Once your student enters high

school, college or even the profes- sional world, they will need to keep their work safe on a backup USB. SanDisk Ultra Backup USB Flash Drives let you archive projects, reports, presentations, photos and even music and videos at the push of a button. As any student knows, backing up documents is crucial, especially as due dates approach. Nobody wants to lose their work just before the deadline. Many college students have to lug their laptops to classrooms in order to take notes, but some students want to devote their whole at- tention to the lecture. The Sansa Clip+ MP3 player includes a voice recorder that lets students save an entire lecture for review later on. As an added benefit, the tiny player makes for the ul- timate workout companion, and is very affordable. The player is also compatible with slotRadio music cards, which offer up to 1,000 preloaded songs for only $39.99, letting your student rock out as they stroll across campus. As you review the school supply lists, make sure you consolidate items as much as possible—to save yourself some money, keep your child orga- nized and reduce the amount of weight on his back.
