Shark Attack
On Thursday, Aug. 19, the return of a local
favorite restaurant will have its grand opening. Shar- key’s Eclectic Sports Lounge takes up residence at 7240 Oswego Road, Liverpool, in the spot vacated by the once- popular hangout Hooligans. “People can’t wait for {Sharkey’s} to come because people have so many memories here,” says co-
owner Julie Moreland, “I can’t wait to bring them back for people.” According to operations manager Chris Moreland, Hooligans used to be the place to be, holding weekly outdoor concerts, called “The Extrava- ganza,” during warm months. “We will bring {those shows} back in the
form of ‘Sharkapalooza,’” says Chris Moreland. First up is a reunion concert with the Todd Hobin Band on Thursday from 7:30 to 9 p.m. The show is free, with Soul Risin’ slated as the opener at 5:15 p.m. Make that a better-late-than-never reunion concert: Hobin was set to per- form at the Inner Harbor on Aug. 1, but after the Wednesdays on the Water concert
series fizzled out, that show was cancelled. Sharkey’s co-owner Jim Nichols says the spot will offer more than music, how- ever. He intends to bring volleyball back to the venue, a big draw for Hooligans,
as well as scheduling dart, ping-pong and cornhole tournaments in the fall. Nichols wants a place where families could come and relax, watch sports or even participate
in them. “We are not just about drinking or watching sports,” says Nichols. “That was our aim: not to be a sports bar.” “But we are not a nightclub either,” adds Chris Moreland. The building has been completely renovated, from bathrooms to outdoor seating,
and the new layout is noticeably different from the old Hooligans. The property backs onto the Liverpool Golf and Country Club, providing an unusual environment for deck sitters; likewise, golfers are welcome to come and relax and refresh after they’re done. Sharkey’s also boasts of its affiliation with Syracuse University athletics and ISP
Sports, the sports productions contractor for dozens of Division 1 schools, includ- ing SU. As such, Sharkey’s is the “official northern SU tailgating location.” Tailgate before football, men’s basketball and men’s lacrosse games, and then use Sharkey’s park-and-ride option to get there and back safely and without the stress of driving yourself. The fee, if any, for this service is to be determined, but will be in place for the Sept. 18 Dome opener. Then there’s the food. Entertainment director Paul Davie says to expect plenty
of variety, including “tadpole” options for the kids. “The menu will have cre- atively themed appetizers, salads, sandwiches, entrees and desserts,” he adds. Sharkapalooza 2010 runs Thursdays through Sept. 9, from 5 to 9 p.m.,
with plans to continue it as a summer series in 2011. In addition to the Todd Hobin Band, opening weekend includes The Feroni Project (5:30 p.m.) and Dirty Little Secret 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 20; bands to be announced for Saturday, Aug. 21; and the Golden Treasures of Rock’n’Roll fund-raiser on Sunday, Aug. 22 from 2 to 6 p.m. fea- turing the Fab 570, Kat Tale and the Gary Dunes Band.
—HALEY BEHRE Sharkey’s is open daily, 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. The
