Live Shark Experience makes waves at fair
BY ALLISON WERBOWETSKY SWIFT CURRENT
A giant fish tank trailer full of sharks and a man with no fear — the whole idea has entertainment written all over it. The Haai Inc. Live Shark Experience, a travelling shark show out of Florida, made its Frontier Days debut this year, and entertain it did.
The 45-foot trailer equipped with a 7,000-gallon saltwater tank rolled in to Swift Current early last week and quickly became a top attraction at the fair.
“It’s been really good. I bet most of these people have never seen a crazy Dutch guy jump in a shark tank before, so it’s really good,” said diver and founder of Haai Inc., Philip Peters. The Amsterdam native moved to the United States in 1986 and began diving with sharks nine years later. The idea of a travelling shark show came to him shortly after that. “I was always interested in sharks. I always wanted to work with sharks, I just didn’t know how,” Peters said.
Peters had originally wanted to start a travelling aquarium with a lot of tanks, but just couldn’t seem to get the idea off the ground.
“So I thought, start with a shark tank and see what happens,” he said.
The tank holds five sharks, including four nurse sharks and one lemon shark. Loretta is the largest of Peters’ nurse sharks, measuring in at eight feet long. Nurse sharks can grow to be an impressive 13 feet in length, but Peters plans to release Loretta back in to her natural habitat well before then. The three-foot-long lemon shark is still very young and could grow to be at least 12 feet long as well. Continued on Page 10
