Quebec man denied bail in drug case

BY MARILYN PALASCHAK SWIFT CURRENT

A Quebec man facing drug-related

charges in Swift Current has been denied bail.

Luc Cournoyer, 28, is facing one count of possession of an illegal drug for the purpose of trafficking and one count of possession of proceeds of crime. Cournoyer was charged June 23 after a motorhome was pulled over on Highway # 1 near Rush Lake. During a search of the motorhome, Swift Current Regional Traffic members uncovered a hidden

compartment with 137 pounds of marijuana with a street value of $350,000. Approximately $8,000 in cash was also found in the vehicle.

After hearing submissions from the

Crown and Defence, the Judge denied bail for Cournoyer. Kathleen Tailly-Bonneau is also facing one count of possession of an illegal drug for the purpose of trafficking and one count of possession of proceeds of crime. She was released from custody June 23. Both cases have been adjourned until July 12 while they seek other council.

Woman given a suspended sentence for sexual assault

SWIFT CURRENT

A Swift Current woman, 31, entered a guilty plea to a sexual assault charge in Swift Current’s Provincial Court June 28. The woman was charged after an incident on November 24, 2008 when she had hired a 14 year-old youth to do some work for her.

The youth finished the work early so they decided to go for a drive and have some drinks.

They made a stop at a local tavern

where she purchased some alcohol. They then continued to drive around and consume some of the alcohol. Both of them became intoxicated and the youth asked if it was okay to stay on her couch

for the night. She then suggested they get a hotel room so the youth would not get into trouble. The court was told they went to a hotel

where the youth paid for the room. They continued to drink when they were in the room and after a while she began making sexual references and started touching the youth. They later both disrobed. The Judge gave the woman a suspended sentence for two years less a day with a number of conditions including having no contact with the victim and abstaining from alcohol and drugs.

She will also spend one year of that time on electronic monitoring.

Man released on bail

BY MARILYN PALASCHAK MAPLE CREEK

A former Maple Creek resident has been released from custody after making an appearance in Swift Current Provincial Court on June 30. Samuel Charles Friday is facing charges of uttering a threat, assaulting a peace officer, resisting arrest and two breaches.

Friday was charged after an incident in the early morning hours of June 19 in Maple Creek when it is alleged a male ran away from RCMP members when they tried to speak with him. He was then tasered and arrested by officers. The Judge granted bail for the accused on a number of conditions. Friday’s next court appearance has been set for July 21 to enter a plea.

Individuals will face drug charges FOREMOST

There were two cases relating to drugs which resulted in the RCMP laying charges. On June 30 at approximately 8 a.m., the Bow Island/Foremost RCMP were dispatched to an area southwest of Foremost, on a report of a suspicious motorist stuck in a farmer’s field. RCMP members responded and located a male in a vehicle in the possession of a small amount of crack cocaine. Daniel Larouche of Medicine Hat has been

charged with possession of cocaine. The first court date was July 6 in Medicine Hat Provincial court.

• In a separate incident July 2, a member of the Bow Island/Foremost RCMP stopped a motor vehicle on Highway 3 near Bow Island for a Provincial traffic offence. During this investigation, the officer noted evidence of drugs in the vehicle. Seized from the vehicle was a small amount of marijuana, hash oil and “magic mushrooms”. Numerous charges of drug possession are

forthcoming against a 40-year-old female from Taber. These charges are as a result of the RCMP Bow Island/Foremost continued drug enforcement in its commitment to community safety.
