Frontier Days in Swift Current have come and gone for another year. Here, there was a lot of action on the midway, including three-year-old Rebecca Kraus (hat) gives an approving thumbs-up to the conductor during a ride on the Sooper Jet. Young Rebecca really enjoyed it (middle , inset photo).

Almost 20,000 take in Frontier Days fun
BY ALLISON WERBOWETSKY SWIFT CURRENT
Discarded lemonade cups, sunburnt noses, a few newly-sprouted
grey hairs on organizers’ heads and many memories are steadfast signs another year of Frontier Days has come and gone. An estimated 19,247 adventure seekers stepped through the gates of Kinetic Park last weekend to take part in Swift Current’s biggest annual event. Unfortunately, that tally is a tad lower than expected.
“Not much lower, I think maybe a couple thousand lower,” said
Tracey Stevenson of the Swift Current Agricultural and Exhibition Association. “I think the weather had a lot to do with it. On Saturday, we had people starting to come in, but then the big cloud came up and people turned back around.” July 1, the first full day of the event, was the busiest of all. Featured that day were the stock dog trials, this year’s debut of the Canadian Cowboys’ Association (CCA) Rodeo, a special concert by Gretchen Wilson and a Canada Day fireworks display. Although the final numbers have not yet been tallied, Stevenson estimated more than 2,500 people packed the grandstand for the Gretchen Wilson concert that night. “It looked full, but it’s deceiving, but that’s about what I was expecting. I would have liked 4,000 but if we can have 2,500, I’m happy. That’s the most I think we’ve ever had in a concert,” she said.

The grandstand was full for the CCA Rodeo that day as well. However, its popularity tapered a bit toward the end of Frontier Days. Friday evening and Saturday afternoon’s performances drew in approximately 700 people each. Two attractions making their Frontier Days debut this year were the Live Shark Experience and Kent Family Magic Circus. “Both of those shows were busy ... The circus, I think the Palliser Pavillion was a good place to put it because it was a good place for families to get in out of the weather. I think they could possibly be coming back next year,” Stevenson said. The shark show, however, will likely not return.
Another popular show new this year was the stock dog trials.
