Thursday, August 12 – Sunday, August 15 Mark your calendars! Hudson’s Old Home Days, sponsored by the Hudson Historical Society, will be held at the Alvirne Hills House (across from Alvirne High School on Route 102) on Thursday, August 12 from 5-10 p.m.; Friday, August 13, from 5-11 p.m.; Saturday, August 14, from noon-11 p.m.; and Sunday, August 15, from noon-5 p.m. The event will feature carnival rides, games, lots of great food, music, crafts and vendors, demonstrations, a fireworks display on Saturday evening, and much more. To participate, contact the Hudson Historical Society at 603-880-2020. Come on down and enjoy lots of great fun for the whole family!


The Hudson Seniors will be having a booth at Old Home Days, where they will be selling various items as well as holding two raffles: one raffle to win two tickets to the NASCAR Race at Loudon on September 19 (valued at $70 each) and another raffle for $100 worth of scratch tickets. Proceeds will benefit the new Senior Center. If anyone is interested in donating other raffle items, contact Lucille at 889-1803.


The GFWC Hudson Community Club will hold its annual Library Lawn Sale from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the former Hudson Library location: the Hills Memorial Library, 18 Library Street, Hudson. Those wishing to reserve a space to sell their goods should contact Cathy Morgan at 883-1644 or morghs53@msn.com. There is a fee for a six- foot space. (We do not provide tables.)


Saturday and Sunday, August 14 and 15 The Hudson/Litchfield Rotary will be holding a Pancake Breakfast from 8-11:30 a.m. at the Alvirne High School Cafeteria. Proceeds will benefit their scholarship awards. There is a small cost per person, and children under 5 eat free. There will also be an Art Exhibit and sale.


Sunday, August 15


As part of the Old Home Days festivities, an Ugliest Car Contest will be held on Sunday, August 15, from noon-2:30 p.m. at the Hills House, Derry Road, Hudson. Bring in your ugly car or create your own by decorating it. There will be prizes (a $125 Sunoco gas card) awarded to the ugliest car and the most creatively decorated ugly car. This event is sponsored by Affordable Wood Energy, LLC.


Saturday, August 21 A Banzai Bandits Carwash will be held on Saturday, August 21, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Alvirne High School. Sponsored by the Hudson Bears Football Team and the Banzai Bandits, all benefits will support the Zach Tompkins Memorial Field.


Sunday, August 23 The High Hopes Foundation will hold their eighth annual Poker Run (rain or shine) at the VFW, 15 Bockes Road, Hudson. Registration is at 9 a.m. There is a registration fee. The event will feature music, raffles, and 50/50 prizes. Rodgers Memorial Library, 194 Derry Road, Hudson, will be collecting school supplies, which the Nashua Soup Kitchen and shelter will distribute to area students. All kinds of supplies are needed, including paper, folders, notebooks, pens, pencils, crayons, markers, rulers, glue, calculators, index cards, book covers, and more. New backpacks for students in grades K-12 are especially needed. Go to www.nsks.org for a full list of supplies needed. You can put a donation in the collection box at the library or the soup kitchen, or they will also be collecting items at Ledge Street School in Nashua on August 9-11 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.


Mondays in August The Rodgers Memorial Library will be screening Adventure Films every Monday night in August at 6:30 p.m. Most are based on young adult novels. All ages are welcome. Students in grades 6-12 who attend will get a raffle ticket for a chance to win a prize in our Teen Reader’s Raffle. The scheduled films are as follows: August 16: The Vampire’s Assistant; August 23: Alex Rider: Operation Stormbreaker; and August 30: Inkheart. Refreshments will be served.


Tuesday, August 17 Students in grades 6-12 were invited to submit short films for a Student Made Film Festival at 6:30 p.m. at the Rodgers Memorial Library, 194 Derry Road, Hudson. Prizes will be awarded for Judge’s Favorite and Audience Favorite. For more information, visit www.rodgerslibrary.org.


The Rodgers Memorial Library holds a book discussion the third Tuesday of each month at 1:30 p.m. The discussion topic on August 17 will be Still Alice by Lisa Genova, the story of a woman’s descent into early onset Alzheimer’s disease. Monday, August 30 The Kiwanis of Hudson will host a Greater Hudson Chamber of Commerce Networking Event at their Function Hall, 14 Melendy Road, Hudson, at 5:30 p.m. Come and enjoy some networking, refreshments, and, at the same time, learn more about the great contributions the Kiwanis of Hudson organization does locally. Starting Now Pre-registration is being accepted for the 2010-2011 school year for the Griffin Memorial School Pre-school Program. This is for the pre-school 3-year-old class, and children need to be age 3 by September 30. For more information, call 424-5831.

Alvirne High School’s Class Act is performing William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew at 7 p.m. at the Hills Garrison School in Hudson. Tickets are available at the door, with discounted pricing for students.


Thursday, August 26 Alvirne High School’s “First Night” program will start promptly at 6:30 p.m. in the C. J. Steckevicz gymnasium, and should conclude around 9 p.m. Parents are asked to pick up a copy of their child’s schedule at 6:15 p.m. in the cafeteria and proceed to the gymnasium. Saturday and Sunday, August 14 and 15 The NH Grizzlies AAU 2011 Baseball Teams will hold tryouts for U13s, 14s, and 15s at the Griffin Memorial School, 229 Charles Bancroft Highway, Litchfield. The NH Grizzlies Baseball Program is a complete instructional program beginning with team workouts in the early fall and continuing through the winter with a game schedule that will be completed in late July or early August. Monday and Thursday, August 16 and 19 Hudson Youth Baseball will hold its registration nights for the 2010 Fall Baseball season from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Recreation Center, 4 Oakwood Street. Friday, August 27 As a fundraiser for the Zach Tompkins Memorial Fund, the Zach Team will be holding a Zach Attach 5K Fun Run/Walk at Alvirne High School, 200 Derry Road, Hudson, at 7 p.m. on August 27. Whether you’re a runner or a walker, this event will be fun for the whole family. On March 8, our community suffered the loss of a very special classmate and friend, Zachary M. Tompkins. Zach had a dream of building a football stadium, and every time someone participates in a fundraiser for Zach, we come closer to building a legacy in his memory that will last a lifetime!
