Salem’s Got Talent Showcases What Kids are Made Of

by Robyn Hatch The Second Annual Salem’s Got Talent Show was recently held at Kelley Library to over 20 contestants and a packed house. Contestants performed many types of dancing and songs from Disney to old time; musical instruments from saxophones, guitars, and recorders; and even a dance involving a hula-hoop. Obi Oseghali introduced the audience to “beatboxing,” which garnered a third-place win. Sara Langtry was the first-place winner with her fast, dramatic dancing. Remi Sprague sang her heart out with a Disney song. With so many good choices, it was difficult to pick just three winners. A few prizes were awarded and everyone was given a pat on the back and sent home until next year’s competition.

Selectmen’s Meeting Recap

by Aaron Shamshoyan Salem will now be in a hunt for two crucial positions to be filled in the next couple of months after

Monday night’s selectmen’s meeting. The announcement came from Chairman Michael Lyons that Selectmen Arthur Barnes had resigned. Barnes is currently in Washington, DC, with his son who was injured in Afghanistan. He will be headed for outpatient rehab and allowed one assistant—and he chose his dad.

A call for candidates will be issued to fill the open selectman position and anyone interested must submit a letter of qualifications by Monday, August 30. The Board is also in the process of filling the Town Manager position. They were looking at two firms to scout potential candidates, Local Government Center (LGC) and Municipal Resources Incorporated (MRI), and decided to go with MRI, as they have a specialty in this area. MRI will cost them $12,500, which is $6,100 more than LGC would have cost. “I’m looking for a firm that is going to attend to details,” said Selectmen Elizabeth Roth when explaining why she chose MRI. MRI just found Derry a Town Manager, and already has the position’s criteria. There will also be public discussion on the 10-year road program on August 16 at 7:30 p.m.

50th Wedding Anniversary – Robert and Beverly Johnson

Robert and Beverly (Long) Johnson of Salem recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at a reception held in their honor by their children at the Atkinson Country Club, Atkinson. The party was hosted by their daughter, Lynda Dunay, and her husband, Mark, of Norton, MA; son, James, and his wife, Nina, of Clarkesville, TN; daughter, Joanne Bean, and her husband, Michael, of New Hampton; and son, Robert, of New York City, NY. They have six grandchildren: Michael and Jennifer Bean, Stephanie and Matthew Dunay, and Andrew and Mary Kate Johnson. They were married on June 4, 1960, at St. Michael Church in North Andover, MA. Mr. Johnson is retired from the New England Telephone Company. The secret to their marriage is simply devotion, trust, commitment, and love for each other and their family.
