BESTER THE SEMESTER Sometimes, you just have to say “road trip” Compiled by Anthony Hinkelman Colleen Kattau: One of the many friendly-to-animals performers who will entertain veg-heads at Vegfest.

REAL APPEEL

Many Central New Yorkers count fall as their favorite time of year. At the same time, the hills south of Syracuse are blessed with the perfect climate to produce some of the best apples in the

country. Celebrate that fact at the LaFay- ette Apple Festival, Saturday, Oct. 10 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, Oct. 11, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with live music, storytelling, and craft and food conces- sions. Food includes all things apple-- apple cider donuts, apple pancakes, pies, cider and the best apple dumplings ever. Other festivities include a midway, arts and crafts, pony rides and cider- making. An Apple Run, including a 1-mile fun run, 5-kilometer walk/run and 15K race, takes place Sunday, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Register at www.lafayetteap plefest.org. Tickets to the Apple Fest cost $4 at the door/$3 in advance. Children 12 and under are free. Visit the Web site for more information.

TAKE A HIKE So theSyracuse University football team wasn’t really on its game

last year, or the year before that, or the year. . . With the crowning ofDoug Marrone as the new head coach comes a new era, a new strategy and, Orange fans hope, a new winning streak to make up for the dark days of old. And with hometown boyGreg Paulus starting at quarterback, there’s sure to be some local support that the Carrier Dome, in its gridiron configuration,

hasn’t seen in quite some time. The Orangemen play their first game against Minnesota Saturday, Sept. 5, at noon inside the Carrier Dome, 900 Irving Ave. Other home games (all on Saturdays) include: Northwestern, Sept. 19; Maine, Sept. 26; South Florida, Oct. 3; West Virginia, Oct. 10; Akron, Oct. 24; Cincinnati, Oct. 31; and Rutgers, Nov. 21. Tickets range from $38 to $113. For more information, call (800) DOME-TIX or visit www.suathletics.com.
