About: Home to more than 900 animals, the Rosamond Gifford Zoo is a great and affordable way to spend an afternoon. With animals ranging from massive, peaceful Asian elephants to the sly, sneaky red wolves to the loud, intelligent mandrills, there is always something inter- esting going on. And that’s without the penguins. The penguin exhibit, launched in 2005, is easily one of the most enter- taining sections of the zoo, as the Hum- boldt Penguins jump and swim around, line up to get fed or just laze about their enclosure. If it’s too cold to venture outside, the zoo offers many of its animals inside its

Barry Park

The colorful playground is probably

the first noticed and the fondest feature among children visiting the park. The fields, just beyond the playground, are generally where the teens and young adults gather. Particularly involved is East Side Soccer, an independent, all-volunteer league that’s been pounding the Barry fields for at least the last 15 years. Next door, the Meadowbrook Basin,

which Onondaga County owns, abuts Mead- owbrook Driver and offers a trail for strolling— not too long to intimidate, yet long enough to provide a reflective trip through the park’s beauty. The basin, the central point to the trail, was initially constructed for flood reten- tion in 1974. Aside from serving its purpose, it attracts its share of wildlife, including geese and ducks. In addition to the trail and water, a woodsy

area imparts a green backdrop. The woods have convenient openings around the trail— branching into trails of their own, giving the hiker different routes to take, whether under open sky or protected by a canopy of green.
