TOP AWARD FOR SPORTINGWALES
SportingWales magazine has been rewarded by the Welsh Sports Hall of Fame for the quality of the work which goes into each edition.
The national sports magazine for Wales is distributed free all round the nation thanks to the support of sponsors and advertisers, who make it possible to produce a high quality magazine to cover all sports in Wales.
Photographer Steve Pope and editor Hamish Stuart were recognised for their work on the magazine by being jointly elected Journalist of the Year at a glittering ceremony in Cardiff where golfi ng legend Ian Woosnam was also inducted into the Welsh Sports Hall of Fame.
Welsh Sports Hall of Fame board member Peter Corrigan, a former Sports Editor of the Observer, welcomed the awards by saying, “Sporting Wales is a quality magazine and does a much needed job in Wales by fi lling the gaps in coverage of all our sports and sporting stars.
“This award is very well deserved. Sporting Wales is something that we have been waiting for in Wales, a quality magazine as everyone can see.”
Sporting Wales was fi rst brought out three years ago with Wales coach Warren Gatland on the cover, the latest issue has Welsh golfi ng sensation Rhys Davies on the front. It has celebrated the successes of Welsh sport throughout that period.
Since then it has become a regular presence in the Welsh sporting scene with thousands of copies distributed through top hotels, leisure centres and sporting venues all around Wales, produced by a central trio of Pope, Stuart and designer Paul Bailey, along with a talented support cast.
Sport Wales, The Celtic Manor Resort, St David’s Shopping Centre, SWALEC and S4C have been among the most regular backers of the magazine, gaining benefi ts through using it as a vehicle for advertising and editorial coverage.
Managing Director and photographer Steve Pope said, “This award is great recognition of the hard work it has taken to make SportingWales a central part of the Welsh sporting scene.

“We could not have done that without all our advertisers and backers, both big and small, who have made it possible to keep providing the popular service to the Welsh public.
“In the current economic climate it has sometimes been tough, but the support of those advertisers has allowed us to keep going with what is a labour of love in many ways.
“This recognition is great for the magazine, but it is also an award for all those who have backed us and made it possible. Also we will be announcing some further exciting developments soon.”
Editor Hamish Stuart added, “We have always taken a positive outlook on Welsh sport and there have been plenty of successes for us to celebrate.
“We have been able to profi le all the successful Welsh Olympians, a Wales Grand Slam, Cardiff City reaching the FA Cup fi nal, to name but a few, but my favourite stories have been the offbeat ones in sports with great achievements and characters who rarely get attention.
“The striking photography and brilliant design has always been a key element, as you would expect from a glossy, high-quality colour magazine, along with some great writing and strong stories.
“We know there is an appetite out there for the magazine from the speed with which it gets taken from the venues where it is distributed. People often fi nd it hard to believe that it is free, but that is because we want it to be available for as many people as possible – thanks to our fabulous advertisers.
“As I point out in every edition, they are quality backers of a quality product.”
SportingWales will shortly be taking another stride forward by announcing some exciting awards, so watch this space.
