The Word Around Town... Letters to our Editor

Supporting Terry Dakin for Hillsborough County Commissioner

As a life-long resident of Nashua and

a current City of Nashua Board of Public Works Commissioner, I support Terry Dakin in the Republican primary for the position of Hillsborough County Commissioner (District 2 includes Nashua, Hudson, Hollis, and Pelham). We need someone like Terry who understands budgets and would serve as a watchdog for the Hillsborough County taxpayer. Terry has the experience in creating, implementing, and managing multi-million dollar budgets. Terry Dakin is my choice in the Republican primary for Hillsborough County Commissioner on September 14.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Towards a World with More Birthdays!

I am a 23-year-old resident of Pelham who is doing the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk in Boston on October 3! I am really excited to be doing this; it is a great cause and I hold it very close to my heart. Cancer has affected each and every one of us, and the risk of breast cancer in women grows every day. I need the help of

the people I love to raise money for the women of the future to help their futures be bright and the birthdays to continue! I am doing it as a single walker and have a goal of $500! I need your help, though. As a community, we can really make a difference for women out there who suffer from this illness; raising money will help stabilize the change of a better, fearless future for women. If you can help me and donate to my walk, you can help make a difference for women of our country and our world. To donate, go to my Web page, http:// main.acsevents.org/site/TR/MakingStridesAgainst BreastCancer/MSABCFY11 NewEngland?px=173 83695&pg=personal&fr_id=28135&fl=en_US&s_ tafId=28135my and progress! I appreciate every little bit and all your support.

Support for Ovide Lamontagne for U.S. Senate

Endorsing an individual seeking public office is a serious decision that must be carefully considered and never taken lightly. By making a public endorsement, you are essentially entrusting your own credibility and judgment to another individual. Recently, I have been hesitant to make endorsements because my trust has sometimes

been betrayed by candidates I have supported in the past. However, without hesitation, I endorse Ovide Lamontagne for U.S. Senate to replace Judd Gregg.

In a time when the federal government

is growing and spending at historic and unsustainable levels, now is the time for a genuine conservative, like Ovide, who will not only arrest out-of-control federal spending and the deficit, but also will actively sponsor innovative legislation that finds ways to deliver essential services at affordable costs.

What is most impressive about Ovide is his commitment to public service in New Hampshire. He has been a leader in Easter Seals, Catholic Charities, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), the Boy Scouts, and the past chairman of St. Mary’s Bank, among many others. Ovide possesses an essential decency and coherent political philosophy, honed by many years of thought, service, and practice of conservatism. He is a non-establishment conservative who will make decisions in the best interest of the people he serves and not because he is following orders from party leaders. He is a candidate who will never betray constituent trust and will always act in the best interest of the people based on what he feels is right in his heart. Ovide Lamontagne is exceptionally worthy of your consideration and support in the Republican Primary on Tuesday, September 14.

Over 100 NH Legislators Urge Senators Gregg and Shaheen to Ban ‘Crush Videos’ Today, over 100 New Hampshire legislators signed

a letter urging New Hampshire Senators Judd Gregg and Jeanne Shaheen to co-sponsor and support legislation that would ban the manufacturing and distribution of videos depicting grotesque acts of animal cruelty, known as “crush videos.” “I’m very pleased that so many legislators, representing both political parties, have joined together and voiced their support for this important piece of legislation, encouraging our U.S. Senators to take action. This legislation ensures that law enforcement has the tools they need to crack down on this sickening cruelty, which includes the intentional crushing, burning, drowning, suffocating, and impaling of small dogs, cats, and other animals for the deranged sexual titillation of viewers,” said State Representative D.J. Bettencourt (R-Salem). This spring, the United States Supreme Court, in United States v. Stevens, overturned a previous 1999 law banning “crush videos,” citing the law was overly broad and ran afoul of the First Amendment. Last month, in reaction, the United States House of Representatives passed HR 5566 by a vote of 416-3, which follows the Supreme Court’s opening for a more narrowly defined law.

In

the United States Senate, Senators Jon Kyl (R-AZ), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), and Richard Burr (R-NC), plan to introduce a companion bill to HR 5566 soon. The New Hampshire legislators are urging Gregg and Shaheen to support HR 5566 and co-sponsor the companion Senate bill.

Joining Bettencourt in

the letter were local State Representatives David Bates, Ronald Belanger, Margaret Crisler, Anthony DiFruscia, Bob Elliott, Marilinda Garcia, Mary Griffin, Walter Kolodziej, Charlie McMahon, and Carolyn Webber.

Dear Senators Gregg and Shaheen, As you know, this spring, the United States

Supreme Court in United States v. Stevens overturned

a 1999 law banning the manufacturing and distribution of videos depicting grotesque acts of animal cruelty, holding that the law was overly broad and ran afoul of the First Amendment. At the heart of this case was an interstate and foreign commercial prohibition of “crush videos,” which show extreme acts of animal cruelty, including the intentional crushing, burning, drowning, suffocating, and impaling of small dogs, cats, and other animals for the sexual titillation of viewers. While many of us were disappointed by the Court’s

ruling, we are encouraged by the actions of the United States House of Representatives, which passed H.R. 5566 by a vote of 416-3, bipartisan legislation sponsored by Representative Elton Gallegly (R-CA), and Representative Gary Peters (D-MI), that would crack down on traffickers of these videos, and follow the pathway that the Supreme Court left open for Congress to construct a more narrowly crafted law. HR 5566 is finely tuned to do just that. This legislation is also critical from a practical there were at least 3,000 separately

standpoint:

produced crush videos readily available in the marketplace selling for up to $300 apiece in the late 1990s, but after the original law was enacted, they all but vanished. Since the law was invalidated, we have seen crush videos repopulate the Internet as the producers of these films now believe they have a free pass to torture animals for profit. We need to have a new law on the books soon to give law enforcement the tools they need to crack down on this sickening cruelty. Senators Jon Kyl (R-AZ), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), and

Richard Burr (R-NC), plan to introduce a companion bill to HR 5566 soon in the Senate, and we ask that you, as our United States Senators, sign on as co- sponsors. We believe that there is perhaps no type of animal abuse so evident, indefensible, and uniformly condemned as crushing or lighting animals on fire

for sick entertainment and profit. This is an issue that cries out for reform. We ask that you as United States Senators support

the issue and continue to advocate for the safety and protection of the animals affected by these terrible acts.
