Family-friendly Concert at Griffin Park Engages Crowd by Lynne Ober
Windham’s Griffin Park is a vibrant, busy park. On a sunny summer evening, basketball, tennis, and baseball players as well
as skaters enjoyed their sports while the playground was full and people gathered at the pavilion for Amy Conley and Folk Energy concert. The band combines a high- energy style with the best in family music—music that children and parents can sing with, dance with, and enjoy together. It wasn’t long before the crowd was singing along with the band.
Before the concert started, people began picking
their favorite spot for their blankets and chairs. Some brought picnic lunches and set up in the shade or sat at the picnic tables in the pavilion. Others spread blankets under the sun where the evening breezes cooled them off. Conley, who sings lead vocals as well as plays the
guitar, banjo, or harmonica, brings over 20 years of performing and teaching experience to each performance. She easily engaged the crowd, who soon became active participants in the concert. Conley offers several varieties of musical shows. Folk Energy has percussion and bass. The engaging beat filled the air over the park.
Tese concert-goers enjoyed sitting in the sun, but others chose to sit in the shade on a mild summer evening
www.woofwoof.net Pelham Library Hosts Musician Charlie Christos
by Robyn Hatch This week at the Pelham Library, folk/rock and blues musician Charlie Christos sat down with new musical artists to listen to their music, giving them an opportunity to “break out of the box” and showcase their raw talents. Taylor Morin and her friend, Brian Alley, played a song for Charlie that blew everyone away, after which Charlie gave them recommendations on how to display their talent, and how to have the courage to never give up on their dream of playing music.

www.woofwoof.net Charlie Christos has a real love for music, and it shows
to give new people and established people alike an avenue to discuss, play, and work on their stuff in a coffeehouse-like environment. While there, Charlie also shared much of his background and explained how he went about the pitfalls of being a new artist, including his trials and his blunders when he first started out in the business, as well as played some of his own material.

890.6239 Changes at Pelham Old Home Day
by Lynne Ober While Pelham’s Old Home Day Committee is busily working to ensure that the event has the same charm, friendliness, and fun, there are changes. The biggest change is the new date. For the 104th Pelham Old Home Day, the date has changed to September 18. According to committee members, there was a feeling that the date needed to be moved to accommodate more families. By moving the date to the middle of September, families will be back from vacations and have gotten their school-aged children started in the new school year. As a result, it is hoped that more people will find it more convenient to attend this spectacular event. This is not the first time that the date has changed. Pelham’s first Old Home Day, held in response to the governor’s request for Old Home Day celebrations, was observed on August 18, 1906. At that time, August was the best time because the farming communities were between harvests, but farmers rarely took summer vacations. In 1906, Pelham was championing its place on the new Electric Railroad System between the points of Lowell, MA, and Canobie Lake/Salem. The day chosen was a Wednesday
because businesses closed in Lowell for the afternoon and their day in the country benefited the people of Pelham. The first celebration in 1906 reunited the Greeley Singers. In 1931, the First Congregational Church began to sponsor the

event, and in 1932, the much-anticipated auction was held. At some point, the event moved to the weekend and has stayed on a weekend. This year, it has been moved back to September 18 when the weather should still be gorgeous. The 5K run and walk will again be sponsored by the Nashua Special Olympics, and will be the first event to kick off this fun day filled with traditional activities. The auction and bike/doll carriage parade both begin at 9:30 a.m., and from there, until it’s time for the church supper, it will be one fun event after another. A full line-up of entertainment will fill the stage, and craft vendors will be on the lawn. There will be food, games, and a parade. Who could ask for more? Plan to mark your calendars for September 18 and join the fun.

New Assistant Principal for Windham High School
by Barbara O’Brien The vacancy created by former Windham High
School Assistant Principal Tom Murphy, when he was promoted to school principal, has been filled.
Murphy took on the principal’s job at the new
high school on July 1, following the resignation of Richard Manley. Manley served as Windham High’s very first principal. He served in that capacity for only one year. Windham High School began operations late last August, opening with only freshmen and sophomores in attendance. Taking on the job of the new assistant principal
is Tom Burke. Burke was introduced to Windham School Board members during their meeting on July 26. Burke is moving to New Hampshire from Chester, VT, where he served previously as that
community’s
high school assistant principal for three years. Burke also has a background in guidance counseling.
Burke told School Board members that he is “delighted with the opportunity to work at Windham High School,” and is thrilled to be working in conjunction with Principal Tom Murphy. Burke said he is very impressed with everything he has seen at the new high school. “I am looking forward to a long and fruitful relationship with Windham High School,” he added. School opens for the 2010-2011 school
year on Wednesday, September 1. Freshmen orientation will be held on Tuesday, August 24.
