Kids Get Crafty at Kelley Library
by Robyn Hatch The Kelley Library goes out of its way to create fun and exciting programs for the kids on a very limited budget. Librarian Corrie Chiknas presented their latest event, which involved making “stuffed” fish to color in less than an hour using a brown paper design. You could see much concentration and project development going on as the children worked on their colorful, unique creations. Corrie helped the children stuff and glue the fish so they ended up with a 3D project to take home to show their families.

submitted by Colin Manning According to U.S. Department of
Labor, New Hampshire outpaced nearly every other state in the nation in job growth over the last year, confirming independent economists’ predictions that New Hampshire would lead the nation in economic recovery.
According to preliminary figures from the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, New Hampshire had the second- fastest rate of job growth in the nation
from June 2009 through June 2010. While nationally, the number of jobs fell by an average of .1 percent, New Hampshire saw growth of 1.43 percent, or more than 8,900 jobs created over the last year. “Maintaining New Hampshire’s business- friendly atmosphere so that companies can be successful, grow, and get people back to work has been my top priority. News that New Hampshire has the second- highest rate of job growth in the nation is consistent with the sense of increased optimism I’m hearing from business leaders across the state, and the reports of independent analysts who say New Hampshire’s economy is leading the region as we emerge from this national recession,” Governor Lynch said. New Hampshire’s unemployment rate for June dropped to 5.9 percent—nearly 40 percent below the national average. “This is certainly good news for New Hampshire, but our work is not done, and I remain committed to helping ensure companies can continue to grow and create jobs. There are still a number of men and women who are still looking
for employment, and I will continue working to make sure that every person who wants a job is able to find one.” Governor Lynch has implemented a number of initiatives to help New Hampshire businesses grow and put people back to work. New Hampshire Working, passed this spring, is making it easier for companies to train and hire unemployed workers, as well as to avoid layoffs, and the Green Jobs Launching Pad is helping new companies grow. Governor Lynch reinstituted the Job
Training Fund, which has helped train more than 7,000 workers from across New Hampshire in the skills needed for today’s economy. In addition to keeping New Hampshire’s state taxes among the lowest in the nation, Governor Lynch instituted a research-and-development tax credit to encourage companies to invest in innovation and new jobs in New Hampshire. haven’t-done-this-in-a-really-long-time sort of way. “That was great!” he said. The turnout included teens that have all but mastered the half- pipe and other obstacles around the site to little children that tentatively wound their way around the facility. Six-year-old Nate Kloza was learning (with a lot of help from dad, Mark Kloza) how to use a ramp while his twin brother, Cam Kloza, tooled around the park on his board with abandon. “The kids are so pumped to be coming here,” Mark said. The park is open to skateboarders until dusk and rules for its use are posted.

vehicle he was searching in hopes of finding a green, vegetative substance, which he had no problem locating. Salem Police Department’s newest member, Officer Keating, was put up to the task of taking a hit with the taser during a demo that stunned some of the children, who seemed unsure at first of what the weapon being demonstrated does. They learned all about “riding the lightning” once Keating was hit and had his muscles incapacitated. Live entertainment kept the

crowd entertained, especially the kids. Sergeant Joel Dolan of the Community Services Unit was given the task of setting up and seeing that National Night Out ran smoothly, and even though it was his first year doing so, no one would ever know. Sergeant Dolan was out mixing with the crowd getting to know people and making sure everything was perfect. A great job done was done on his part, as well as all those who helped to make it such a fun event as always.

Campers Enjoy Fun Time at Copper Cannon
submitted by Louise Landry, Derry-Salem Elks Going to Camp is always a good time—25 children left the parking lot of the Derry- Salem Elks to attend a week at Copper Cannon in Franconia Notch, which is a camp for underprivileged children from all over New Hampshire. This camp is designed for youth from nine to 12 years old. These children share cabins with five to six other campers and a staff member. Mornings are spent participating in activities as a cabin group. Afternoons may include special “all camp” events, swimming at Echo Lake, or the opportunity for the campers to choose areas of special interest, such as a unique craft activity, touch rugby, folk dancing, or other surprises created by the staff. The evenings continue the camp experience with campfires, games, and a cookout complete with s’mores. The Elks sent 75 children to camp the week of July 11-17.
