by Andrea Ganley-Dannewitz National Night Out celebrates its 27th
anniversary this year at local police stations across the nation. Salem’s National Night Out, held at Salem Police Department on Tuesday from 5-9 p.m., was a hit with the children of all ages as always. Sponsored by Target Stores, National Night Out brings communities like Salem together for one good cause. Interacting with local police in a social setting eases the minds of many and helps children who may not be so quite sure about police to see them in a fun and child- friendly atmosphere. Live entertainment and food provided by T- Bones and Balducci’s Brick Oven Pizzeria made for full tummies and smiling faces, especially for those little ones. Free games and prizes galore, balloons, face painting, and all those things children love so much were readily available, and children lined up to take their turns at treats, dunking Officer Brendan Gleason in the dunk tank, and watching police demonstrations. Soon-to-be retired K-9 officer Shane Childs and his K-9 partner, Czar, walked the crowd and was a major enjoyment for children and dog lovers

by Jay Hobson Seven years ago, 14-year-old Brennan Getchell went before the town to ask for a place where skateboarders like him could enjoy their pastime and be safe in the process—a skateboard park. The town agreed and set the wheels in motion. Now, at 21, Getchell attended the grand opening on Saturday morning at Hedgehog Park of the skateboard park that he had asked for all those years ago. “I don’t skate anymore, but it really feels good to see this happening,” Getchell said. According to Getchell, the skateboard park
was going to be at Field of Dreams on Geremonty Drive. “The Field of Dreams location fell through and
a search for where to put it began. Eventually, it was decided to put it here [Hedgehog Park],” Getchell said.
At the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Recreation Director Chris Dillon said that the skateboard facility is phase one of a four-phase plan for the development of Hedgehog Park. “This [the skateboard park] is part of a four- phase plan which will include an extended gravel parking lot, a sand volleyball court, tennis and basketball courts, and renovated bathroom
