It is assumed that James and William were brothers. Though tried for separate arrests

(though for possessing the same kinds of articles) and living in separate parishes (though neighboring one another), the fact that they were both tried at the same time, imprisoned at the same location, sailed on the same ship, sent to the same colony, indentured as servants to the same man, their names spelled in the same way at the same time even through different spellings (Spurgins, Spriggen, Spurgen, Spurgeon), and finally that a James and William Spriggen bought land next to each other in America, strongly suggests their relationship as brothers is more than circumstantial. I would put the weight of the evidence on them indeed being brothers.

The London of our Spurgeons was much different from what we know today. As one

writer says: “One way of bringing out the changes which have occurred in London over the last 250 years is to list some of the institutions or places which we take for granted today but which did not exist in the 1750’s: there were no railway or underground stations; no cinemas or bingo halls; no state schools or town halls; no hotels or restaurants; no garages, petrol stations, car parks or bus stops; no post offices or post boxes; no libraries, museums, concert halls or department stores; no national press or television aerials; no public lavatories; no factories, tower blocks or sports centres; no job centres or doctors’ surgeries; and no police
