1 steel trap $2.50, a lot of hogs $28, 4 head of sheep $20, 4 head of cattle $90, and 1 horse $75, among many other items, totaling $448.75 for his estate. Marked in his estate’s Bill of Sale for the estate auction is the name of William Ahart who married his daughter Catherine. This William purchased 1 shovel plow $1.25, 1 bed stead 6 1/4 ¢, 1 Biddle and drawing knife 51¢1 Hackle 35¢, 1 Auger & square 40¢, 1 tub of feathers $3.90 (at 30¢ per #), 3 chairs $1.08, 1 blanket $1.42, 1 cup board $6.87 1/2, 1 lot of Timothy seed 50¢, 1 keg of vinegar 65¢, and 1 mare $34.01. Submitted attorney’s fees were listed as 2 days attendance at the court at Harrisville $2, attorney’s fees $2, clerk’s fee 75¢, and 5% commission of $24.04.283


The letters


for the settlement of his estate show that on 29 June 1855 his estate was valued at $449.93 minus debts equaled $127.84.284


The final settlement of estate after deduction of legal fees and


commissions shows a balance of $55.55 due his heirs.285 Jonathan Spurgeon’s daughter Catherine married Wilhelm Ehrhardt (William Ahart) on


13 March 1851 at West Union, Doddridge County, (West) Virginia. West Union was an offshoot of what was called Mount Carmel. In the construction of the Northwestern Turnpike, it missed Mt. Carmel by a few hundred yards; West Union was built on the road and soon took the trade from the old town.286


On the genealogical trip they made to the area in 1988, my cousins, Elmer and Barbara


Ahart, visited West Union. Barbara wrote in her diary, “West Union is an absolutely fascinating little town—nestled down in a valley with steep hills all around, and some of the houses built on the hills. The side streets are still paved with bricks. The business section is very old. I don’t think it has probably changed much in the last hundred years.” The following picture, taken 24 February 1892 at Salina, Kansas, shows Wilhelm and Catharine (Who were affectionately called Pap and Mammy):
