We can follow Jonathan’s settlement in (West) Virginia through the U.S. Census records.

The 1810 U.S. Census shows a Jona. Spurgen living in Monongalia County, no township listed, age 26-45, 2 males under 10, 1 female 16-26, and 1 female under 10 (Also shown on the same census page are a Jas., Jessee, and Jno. Spurgeon; perhaps father James, son Jesse, and Uncle John?).264

This census shows us Jonathan and his first wife Ruth Jeffreys and their children (Not

my direct line of descent). Given that he was born in 1787 and had 3 children under 10 by 1810, we may assume he married Ruth Jeffreys ca. 1805/6 when he was 18/19 years of age.

The 1820 U.S. Census shows him living in Preston County (Once Monongalia, West) Virginia, no township listed, showing 1 male 26-45, 3 under 10, and one, 16-18, with 1 woman
