husband, Frederick Snider, whom she married 23 June 1812, both died. Though no known marriage record exists for Jonathan and Ruth, his first wife’s Christian name is found in a land deed contracted in 1813 between “Jonathan Spurgeon and Ruth his wife....” and Amos Glover, who married Drucilla (sic), one of Jonathan’s sisters.252 tory.253

Jonathan Spurgeon married Elizabeth Catherine Smell Snider, born 13 August 1785.

From information received from Spurgeon descendants, I have been told that he married Elizabeth Smell on 25 September 1816 at the Trinity Union Church at Springfield Twp, Bucks County, Pennsylvania (Where her father Philip Smell was baptized in 1758). I have tried to confirm this date as the correct marriage date and location but have been unable to locate the exact marriage record. I contacted both the Trinity Church as well as the regional records archives of the Lutheran Church but with no positive results of finding a marriage in this location. However, a bond taken out in Doddridge County, (West) Virginia, 25 September 1816 mentions their intention to marry on this date. As marriages usually took place within several days following the taking out of the marriage bond, it seems probable that this is close to the date of their marriage. That bond says:

Know all men by these presents that we, Jonathan Spurgeon and Jacob Smell, are held firmly bound unto Michael? Nicholas Esquire, governor as Chief Magistrate of the Commonwealth of Virginia for the time being and his succe∫sers to the use of the said Commonwealth in the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars, to which payment well and truly to be made we bind ourselves, our and each of [our] heirs, executors and administrators, jointly and severally, firmly by these presents sealed with our seals and dated this 25th day of September 1816. Whereas a marriage is suddenly intended to be had and solemnized between the above bound Jonathan and Catherine Snider, daughter of Philip Smell, both of this county now the condition of the above obligation is such that if there be no lawfil cause or just impediment to obstruct the said marriage, then the above obligation to be void ? to remain in full force and verdict? Signed by Jonathan Spurgin and mark of Jacob Smell [Catherine’s brother].

Jonathan and Catherine Spurgeon had 8 children (Jeremiah died of Typhoid fever):
