The Court appoints John Johnston, William Spurgeon, Joseph Bennet, John Spurgeon, Jacob Meeks, and Abraham Miley that they, or any four of them, if they see cause, lay out the same courses and distances and make report of their proceedings to the next Court.149


In 1774, 75, 76, the tax lists show John as being taxed in Colerain Township, Bedford


County (in 1776 with his sons James and John, neither taxed on uncultivated land but both paying £ 15.0 for provincial tax, and shown as “freemen” (or being single), and also showing his brothers William, Ezik’l, and Samuel.150

County, Maryland, being part the disputed border between Pennsylvania and Maryland). In 1783 John Spurgeon’s brothers’ James, Samuel, and Ezekiel Spurgeon are listed with 50 acres each and live stock.152

1777/8 as he is listed on the tax lists in 1779 (listed with his son John as Jun’r. and he miswritten as Jr. instead of Sr.) and 1783 being taxed on 50 acres of land and livestock in Cumberland Valley Township in Bedford County, Pennsylvania151

there are no distinguishing remarks this listing could refer to either John Sr. or John Jr. Also in 1784, John’s brothers James, Samuel, and Ezekiel appear again in the Colerain Township tax lists.155


Some time shortly after John Spurgeon Sr. disappears from the Bedford County tax lists,


and he must have moved on to Monongalia County, (West) Virginia. In a (West) Virginia state census for 1782, a William Spurgin with 12 in the family, and a James Spingin with 8 in the family are listed (number in family includes head of household).156


It seems this James would


have been the son of John Sr. In 1783 a William and James are found on a taxation list for Monongalia County and living next to a Samuel Robinett (the 3 Spurgeon brothers married Robinette sisters: William married Priscilla; Samuel married Rebecca; and Ezekiel married Catherine).157


It would be reasonable to assume therefore that this William Spurgeon is the
