north from Hanbury Street is shown as Coverley Close. In 1993, there was a hospital in the NW corner, a school in the NE corner, and another school near the SE corner. Where present day Woodseer Street ends there used to be a brewery that included the title of Coverley Fields on its gates. Terrace houses were built on the site of the brewery some years ago.32

Area of Coverley Fields 1747 In 1994, I visited the area of Coverley Fields as outlined on the above map. The area is


quite built up, industrial, and mainly populated by East Indians. I walked the perimeter of the above area as outlined and found only one building a few blocks away on Whitechapel Road of the age of our Spurgeons in this part of London, dated 1696. One narrow walkway (off Deal and Woodseer streets near the hospital) led to small attached two-story homes with street gas lights that was reminiscent of the type of narrow streets that would have characterized this area of the city in 1700. Other than that, there is nothing to associate the area with our Spurgeons in modern times. A photograph of this street of small attached houses follows:


An interesting question is why the area of Coverley Fields, which as can be seen in the


early map was a suburb, would be an area of the kind of major and petty crime found to have been committed there. In contrast to modern cities, in the early modern period in which our Spurgeons
