The east window was replaced in 1949 with the lower part depicting the bombed streets around the church. The baptismal font, where our first known Spurgeon forebear was baptized, has Norman work on two sides (overlapping Romanesque arches) interspersed with later carvings from the 19th century. A picture of the font follows along with another with me by it in March of 2000:


On a wet and blustering September evening in 1993, a new rector was installed at the


parish church of St. Dunstan and All Saints, Stepney. An account of the service states that “the old church was bursting at its seams, nearly as full as it used to be three hundred years ago when five galleries were erected to accommodate the first large influx of immigrants. The bells, made in the Whitechapel foundry, pealed out into the damp air as clouds of clergy were blown and buffeted across the grass, their surplices billowing like sails as they processed in pairs from the night into the Church of the High Seas with its brand new red ensign hoisted on the church tower. Known as the sailor’s church because of all the seafarer’s around, St. Dunstan’s is the only building of any antiquity in the East End with Saxon figures just visible above the altar. ‘St. Dunstan’s,’ said the
