books—isn’t a newly discovered thought. “I always had the idea of stories spilling out their characters from their book,” she elaborated, continuing to say she’s happy she brought her idea to fruition. Melissa Orioli, 19, won second place in the
adult category; it was her third year competing in the contest, marking her second win. Orioli, who studies film at the Rochester Institute of Technology, described her feelings on winning in four words: “Awesome,” she said, grinning. “It’s very rewarding.” Remember La Celle? She won the category
for best copy of a master artist. Smiling and laughing, La Celle kneeled over her work. “I’m just excited ’cause you hope for the best but never expect it,” she said. As a technical artist for a Syracuse law firm, La Celle partic- ipated in the contest to satisfy her need for a creative outlet. As for her winnings, La Celle said she’d stroll over to the Northeast Jazz and Wine Festival, enjoy a glass of wine and toast to her unexpected victory temporarily memo- rialized on concrete.

Every Dog Has Its Day WSTM-Channel 3 chief meteorologist
Wayne Mahar tells the non-fiction story of the Priscilla Mahar Animal Welfare Foundation in the same manner he tells the weather: conver- sational, enthusiastic and informed. However, rather than predicting an approaching storm
This carnival will guest-star hairy, friendly
pups of all sizes, shapes, colors and breeds. Can two-legged attendees also accompany their furry, four-legged family members as additional guests? Mahar says absolutely. “Bring your pets,” he exclaimed. “It’s all for the pets.” All dogs, however, must be leashed. Mahar said roughly 15 animal-centered
vendors and roughly 20 animal-rescue organi- zations, including shelters that look out for cats and horses, will set up camp at the Canine Car- nival. Obedience demonstrations and a show conducted by the Rosamond Gifford Zoo will provide entertainment while rabies clinics and micro-chipping will inform and protect. There’s something in it for the kids, too; according to Mahar, a bouncy house will be provided for children. Unannounced local celebrities will walk and showcase their own dogs along with pups in need of homes. Mahar hopes the appearance of familiar faces will encourage attendees to adopt an ownerless pet. front or a batch of warm, tasty weather, Mahar discusses animal wellness, a cause he’s sure is worth crusading for. With the inaugural Canine Carnival on Saturday, Aug. 7, Mahar hopes his non-profit organization can do just that. About three years ago, Mahar, who has
worked at Channel 3 for a quarter-century, said he founded the Priscilla Mahar Animal Welfare Foundation in the name of his late mother. Praising his hard-working committee members, he said the organization raises and donates money to local animal shelters and welfare groups. Although the Canine Carnival—that’s
canine, not K-9—is the first of its kind and is expected to be the organization’s largest fundraising event so far, Mahar said his animal welfare foundation has also raised money at the Syracuse Crunch’s hockey games. The carnival, sponsored mainly by Weg-
mans, will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Onon- daga Lake Park, on the shore of Seneca River at Wegmans Good Dog Park. To Mahar, the location couldn’t be better. “It’s a good fit”, he explained, adding that Wegmans loves animals as much as he and his organization do.
Cold Spring Road in Liverpool, will host the free carnival. Mahar encouraged folks to park at the Willow Bay end of Onondaga Lake Park, adding that non-stop trams will shuttle pets and people to the Canine Carnival throughout the event. To dig up additional information, visit
www.pmawf.org. Mahar, the proud owner of three dogs and
one cat, said he’s crossing his fingers for good weather, although the event will take place rain or shine. “If you’re an animal lover, you’re going to want to be there,” he said. Need another reason to go? Mahar said Doppler, the orange, 14-year-old weather cat, would be one of the event’s celebrities. Purr-fect. —SAMANTHA HOUSE
