Castle lights P
hilips in partnership with Cadw, the historic environment service of the Welsh Assembly Government, is to relight 18 of the region’s most
impressive castles with predicted energy savings of 50 per cent, equating to saving 92 tons of CO² annually, using state of the art LED lighting technology. Often known as the “Land of Castles”, Wales welcomes millions of visitors to its sites every year. Impacting on the refurbishment programme, the castles have to remain open to the public whilst work is carried out, therefore minimum disruption is an essential factor. Philips built this criterion into its proposal by ensuring that the existing lighting would be replaced on a point for point basis. Built on medieval remains, the fairytale Castle Coch, now enjoys over 60 per cent reduction in power consumption using Philips eW Reach LED floodlights situated in the same positions as the former fittings. With its ability to emit two separate beam angles from each fixture, the lighting picks out the architectural detailing of this romantic vision of the Middle Ages. The main stone façades have been softly illuminated whilst the upper turrets have been accentuated to give greater definition. For further information, visit

Working closely with the project managers, Daedalian supplied doors and screens of coloured and etched laminated safety glass, to the exacting standards of the client and designers. Each panel was made using one of Daedalian’s 200 standard, transparent colour interlayer films and Bridgestone EVA laminating technology. This means that as well as adding great colour to the overall minimal scheme and complying with necessary safety standards; each panel is also water proof, thus protecting the lamination from water ingress, which can plague other glass lamination systems. Each panel was finished by flat etching the surface, softening the bright orange film and ensuring the privacy of the shower users. In addition, the pivots used were sourced from one of Italy’s newest and most innovative hinge specialists; each door is able to swing through 180 degrees and is self closing. Drawing on some of Italy’s renowned design excellence was the perfect compliment to the premium quality of Daedalian’s glass. For further information, telephone 01253 702531 or visit

n recent years, the role of the kitchen has changed from an isolated spot into a central living space. As early as in 1983, designer Otl Aicher postulated that pleasure in eating, cooking and communicating come first. The kitchen itself – the sinks and the cooking unit – must adjust. The designer kitchen was born. At the Research & Development department of Bulthaup’s headquarters, product developers, scientists and physiotherapists search for a balance between minimalist design, ergonmics and functionality. After all, a kitchen should not only be practical and made to last, it should be a delight to the eye as well. With a sophisticated line of products made of durable materials in a sleek design, combined with constant innovation and easily customisable interior designs using Vectorworks, Bulthaup has established itself as a global trendsetter. The interior designers at
b.metropool work with Vectorworks for creating the designs , management plans and detailed drawings for the carpenter and presentation drawings for the client. “When a customer and their family look at the 2D drawing at home, we want them to feel the same atmosphere as in the showroom,” explains Bart Dirinck of
b.metropool. “Accessories in the drawing, such as the chair on which they sat in our store can contribute to that. Or, on the drawing, we include pictures by Bart van Leuven, a photographer we often work with and whose work is on display in the showroom. That’s how we create something personal.”
The kitchen as a lifestyle I
“For the delivery, we always work with the same installers, because the assembly is precision work. For example, the joints between the cabinets have a tolerance of only four millimetres. If necessary, we can make adjustments on site. But in principle that’s not necessary, because that’s why we have made all those plans using the accuracy of drawings created within Vectorworks”. Bulthaup kitchens end up in both new and existing homes. In the latter
case, the kitchen sometimes leads to the renovations of the house. Customers often want more than a kitchen, that leads to new projects on the bathroom or other areas of the home with Bulthaup furniture. Vectorworks provides a perfect solution for bringing these designs together. For further information, visit
