For justice
Ultrascape products from the Instarmac Group plc have been used at the new Bristol Civil Justice Centre, a bespoke building designed to meet the needs of HMCS in delivering civil justice. The building entrance is prominent in the street and will be one of the busiest areas. The landscape architect, Gillespies, needed to ensure they specified long term durable products to secure the external landscaping of the centre, whilst preserving and enhancing the character and appearance of the conservation area. Gillespies, specified the Ultrascape range of products after a visit to discuss a truly environmental and sustainable approach. A demonstration with Instarmac’s Site Support Team was arranged prior to work commencing, to show the contractors how well the range of products perform, enabling application at a 1 in 20 fall. Products from the Ultrascape range used were EP-R9 – epoxy resin mortar, Pro-Bed HS – fine bedding concrete (in bulk supply), Pro-Prime – cementitious slurry primer, and Flowpoint ECO – rapid setting flowable grout containing 20 per cent recycled glass. EP-R9 played a vital role in the development of the exterior paving. For further information, telephone 01827 871871, email

tudents at the Aquinas sixth-form college in Stockport will be fully equipped to achieve straight As next term when the new college building opens in September. Award-winning cladding specialist James & Taylor, worked in partnership with architects Broadway Maylan. The new building concept has been designed with a modern aesthetic, utilising James & Taylor’s Senses Aluminium tiles with varying degrees of reflectivity to create a shimmering, high-tech finish. The Senses Aluminium tiles have been used to great effect for previous prestigious projects including MediaCityUK in Manchester and Jamie Oliver’s Italian restaurant in London’s Canary Wharf. The new £40m building has sustainability at its core and is an inspirational example of how the theory of responsible building can be put into practice. Rainwater recycling, natural lighting and a ventilation system that reduces the need for conventional space heating are all integral to the design and construction. The new, multi-functional building will contain classrooms, laboratories, a new theatre and chapel in addition to staff offices and study areas. For further information, visit

A clever combination
SKYShades UK installed the first of its canopies combined with Organic Photovoltaics (OPV) in May at SKYShades UK Head Office, manor Farm, Low Road, Fenstanton, PE28 9HU. SKYShades have combine tensile membrane structures with OPV– the
third generation of solar power panels. This has created a unique product which SKYShades UK is aiming to rapidly introduce into the UK. SKYShades have been designing, manufacturing and installing tensile membrane structures for many years and thanks to an exclusive worldwide licence with Konarka – the manufactures of the OPV – are now installing tensile membrane structures combined with OPV across the world. SKYShades UK are doing this in the UK now. OPV is the third generation of solar power panels and is the most suited to the UK climate. OPV is thin, lightweight and flexible meaning that it can be put across an entire roof, canopy or structure without affecting the structural integrity of a building. What’s more the OPV generates power by daylight rather than direct sunlight meaning that it will generate significant power in the UK, even on a cloudy day! By having the first UK install made at their UK Head Office, interested
parties can come and see a working example and see for themselves the power generated by this revolutionary and exciting product. The product is ideal for retro fitting onto an existing roof or as a roof itself. With recent Government incentives to encourage the generation of renewable energy, OPV combined with tensile membrane is the way forward. The UK Government announced in April 2010 the start of Feed-In-Tariffs (FIT’s). Producers of renewable energy will now receive a guaranteed income
from the FIT’s. For more information on the FIT’s go to
www.decc.gov.uk. The first installation is a landmark in the solar power industry. SKYShades UK are seeking to expand its distributor base. SKYShades UK are looking for companies who can assist in the rapid distribution of OPV and who can install this exciting product. SKYShades are running workshops near Cambridge regularly to allow those interested in becoming a distributor to find out more. For further information, telephone Ben Clement on 01480 498297, email
