Masters Swimmers Stay Busy Locally, Across the Country

M

ay was a busy month for the MAC masters swim team. The

club’s swimmers competed in the MAC Decathlon, at a local meet in Hood River, a local open water swim in Hagg Lake (near Hillsboro) and across the country for a national competition in Atlanta. They continued into June with another local swim meet in Beaverton.

MAC Decathlon

MAC masters swimmers Joaquin Romera and new member Ben Weston both competed in the 2010 Spring Classic Decathlon during most of May. Defending Decathlon champion Romera made a come-from-behind victory in the final events and now he is the winner for two years running. Weston came in second in his 25-29 age group, after setting a new MAC record for the 200-yard freestyle.

Hood River short course meters meet

The first SCM meet of the year was hosted by the Columbia Gorge Masters team in Hood River on May 16. Mike Dowd, Reggie Sherwood, Brent Washburne and Weston attended this meet and came away with solid victories. Weston broke a 10-year-old Oregon

record in the men’s 100 SCM freestyle by a quarter-second, and a 17-year-old Oregon record in the men’s 200 SCM freestyle by almost 10 seconds. Both Weston and Washburne won all four of their events in their age groups that day. Dowd and Sherwood both won their events.

Members of the potential world record-setting men’s 400 medley relay team at the Northwest Zone LCM Championships, are, from left, Oregon Masters swimmer Kevin Cleary and MAC Masters swimmers Brent Washburne, Ben Weston and Eric Wan.

Washburne lined up some more relays with the other swimmers at the meet. Due to a rule change by FINA, the international swimming organization, the 400- and 800-meter relays are now open for world records. While most of the records have already been set, some of the age groups were still open. In particular, the 100-119 age group (four swimmers with ages around 25-30) was still available. Weston swam on three relays with other Oregon swimmers during the meet: the men’s 100-119 400 SCM freestyle; men’s 100-119 400 SCM medley; and mixed 100-119 400 SCM freestyle relays. He may have set world records in both medley relays, pending approval by FINA. His relays certainly set zone and state records. The men’s 400 freestyle relay broke

a 16-year-old zone record by almost 30 seconds; the mixed 400 medley relay broke a one-year-old zone record by more than 45 seconds; and the men’s 400 medley relay set the first Oregon record for this age group.

Washburne swam on a mixed 120-159

400 SCM medley relay and broke a 23-year old zone record by 23 seconds.

2010 USMS national short course championships

The 40th annual SCY championships was held on May 20-23 in the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center, the site of the swimming events for the 1996 Summer Olympics. The SC nationals is the largest swimming event of the year, and this year there were 1,971 swimmers from 228 clubs. Mike Peyton represented the MAC masters on Oregon’s team of 36 swim- mers. The team came in sixth place in the regional clubs division, beating out MAC’s perennial rival in Washington state, the Pacific Northwest Aquatics (who came in seventh place). The Oregon team also set two national records, 15 zone records and 22 Oregon records.

Peyton swam in three men’s 50-54 events, placing 33rd in the 100 butterfly, 42nd in the 200 freestyle and 46th in the 100 freestyle. He joined three other
