ongratulations to Terry Shanley and Matt Rankin, the two newest additions to the Wall of Fame. Terry won the Canadian national open cham- pionships in the 90 kilogram weight class of Greco Roman wrestling in 1975. Matt won the United States Swimming national championship in the 400 Individual Medley twice, once in 1984 and in 1985.

C

Phil Juckeland PRESIDENT

In order to qualify for the Wall of Fame,

the athlete must meet the club’s Athletic Policy A-8, which includes meeting at least one of the following criteria: 1. Place first or second in a national or international open level competition in a sport promoted by MAC; 2. Be a member of the U.S. Olympic team; or 3. Be nationally recognized for exceptional achievement in sports. These two men join 63 members previ-

ously elected to the wall. Athletes who qualify are nominated by their respective sport committee and vetted through the athletic awards subcommittee, led this year by Carol Robertson.

Summer activity

The dog days of summer have hit Portland, finally! Things seem quiet around the club. But behind the scenes the staff is busy with some significant maintenance and repair projects. The project with the most impact on members is the restriping of the Parking Structure. The project is scheduled to continue until mid-August. You can get the latest information on how to navigate the Parking Structure from the MAC website or by subscribing to the MACtivities email. Another project that affects members in August is the annual maintenance and refilling of the 50-meter and West pools. Refilling the pools is a special perk for MAC members; many pools don’t drain and refill every year. Congratulations to the Pilates Committee

for the culmination of its capital project, which consolidated the program and all its equipment into the newly expanded Pilates Studio on the basement level.

Pilates has had a meteoric rise since the late 1990s when it was first introduced at

the club. In 2007 it became a subcommittee under yoga, and in 2009 it was given full sport committee status. The recent history of Pilates’ creation demonstrates the size of the challenge to start a new sport in our club, which requires devotion, hard work and patience with a little controversy and turmoil mixed in. This project is another facility enhancement envisioned by the Facility Master Plan.

Bylaws changes Every year the board takes a look at the

bylaws to see if they need to be updated. This year we are proposing several changes. These changes were posted July 7, and after a 90-day comment period open to the members, the board votes in early October. See the postings on the bulletin board, on page 18 of this issue or on the website for particulars. One change may seem familiar. In 2008

the board changed the bylaws to move the Food & Beverage Committee from a board committee to a standing committee. In this round of changes, we are proposing that the club is better served by changing it back to a board committee. We believe that financial oversight of this important function is already being done at the Budget & Finance and Property committee levels, while strategic issues should be handled at the board level.

Member survey Later this month look for information on

the five-year club survey. This is an important process for gathering member feedback and I encourage members to participate. See page 23 for details.

MAC history The answer to last month’s history ques-

tion: Revenues from leasing the stadium for dog racing saved the club from defaulting on its debt, and by 1945 the club was debt free. Dog racing was legal; however, during the same period the club profited nicely from an illegal activity. For lunch for two with me, what was the illegal activity?

Send your answer to Board@themac. com. Many members have determined that I get some of my history from the Legacy of the Twenty-six, the book given to members during the 100-year celebration in 1991. Newer members can view a copy in the library or buy one at Powell’s for $6.95. WM
