New to MAC? New to Tennis? Welcome!

W

elcome to MAC tennis, a premier club program that is nationally recognized. Members appreciate the depth of the program’s activities and the wide range of ages and skill levels that can participate.

The goal of the tennis department is to provide a positive atmosphere and compre- hensive program of instruction, classes, league play, tennis teams, social events, tournaments and competitive play to all members. The club is a member of the USTA and is governed by its rules, regula- tions, articles and bylaws.

Tennis information and answers 24 hours a day

One of the best ways for members to familiarize themselves with everything tennis is to log in to the tennis link on theMAC.com. Check out the link and after just a few minutes gain an overview of the facilities, professional staff, junior tennis program, reservations system, league play and more. Members should be sure to go to “myprofile” and select “tennis” in the “opt-in” group section located on the lower right. This allows members to receive timely and useful tennis related e-mails. Members may stop by the Tennis Office on the fifth floor of the Parking Structure. During business hours, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., there is almost always a staff member there who is happy to provide information and/ or answers to tennis questions. The staff’s goal is to make the MAC tennis experience as rewarding as possible.

Members may instantly meet other MAC tennis players by attending weekly open play. During open play times, just drop in, check in with the tennis staff person coordinating the rotations and get ready to have fun and make new tennis friends. Women’s open is every Tuesday from 8:15 a.m.-noon, except on Tuesdays when there is a city league match, then open play ends at 11:30 a.m. Women’s open play is also held on Thursday evenings from 5-8:45 p.m. (7:30 p.m. when there are mixed doubles USTA matches). Men’s open play is held twice a week as well. Men can play on all seven indoor courts on Mondays from 5-8:45 p.m. Men’s open play on Saturdays is from

Courts resurfacing and viewing lounge projects underway

The ongoing maintenance program for MAC indoor courts has calls for resur- facing during the summer. This timing has provided an opportunity to consider also making a playing surface color change. After researching options, weighing pros and cons, gathering feedback from profes- sional staff and members, the Tennis Committee selected a new U.S. Open blue surface color. Be sure to check out the new look on courts 5 through 7.

USTA updates

August is sign-up month for mixed doubles division league play. Teams are forming soon for the fall season schedule. Reports from past team members are that mixed doubles play is a great way to improve members’ tennis game as well as their social life.

Tennis University resumes in fall

The new Court 1 tennis lounge is expected to be a welcome improve- ment for players and viewers. The architect’s rendering depicts the expanded size, two-tiered view- ing area and user-friendly counter space for snacks and beverages.

8:15 a.m. on courts 1, 2 and 5, and 9:30 a.m. on all seven indoor courts. It ends at noon. USTA and city league team play offers a more structured opportunity to play competitive tennis and represent the club in matches against other local area clubs. It is competitive and team divisions are orga- nized according to ages (youth through super seniors) and skill levels ranging from beginner to advanced. It’s not all hard work in the tennis program. There are numerous social func- tions throughout the year that provide opportunities to serve up some extra fun. For example, there is a summer tennis barbecue scheduled for men and women Wednesday, Aug. 11. The barbecues are organized by head pro (and chef) Wayne Pickard. This is a great opportunity to meet other MAC tennis players and play in a fun-filled atmosphere. Sign up for the August date online or by contacting the Tennis Office at 503-517-7592 Quick Register TE005

Tennis University is scheduled to resume Monday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. in the Tennis Lounge. There is a lecture or demonstration, then the class moves to the tennis courts from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Students can hone their tennis skills and see imme- diate improvement in their games. Watch for sign-up information in September.

City League kick off

Competitive city league matches begin in early September. This year the club has 10 teams with more than 200 MAC women participating. Congratulations to Robin Collins and the MAC G team, which finished on top at the end of last season. They move up to F level for the 2010/2011 year, and Kendra Dauenhauer and Antonia Green take the reins as co-captains. Remember that matches are played

on Tuesdays and Wednesdays around the noon hour. Tuesday matches begin at 11:30 a.m. and Wednesday matches begin at noon. Women’s open play is cut short on Tuesdays on courts being used for a City League match. Also, with 10 vital teams, matches double up occasionally and often MAC hosts two teams on the same day. Court reservations are severely limited during these times.
