AC member Joanne Cicrich ended an impressive seven-month compet- itive badminton season with a second-place finish at the Canadian Masters Badminton Championship May 1. The tournament culminated a stretch that saw Cicrich travel to both Australia and Miami, Fla. The traveling wasn’t just a vacation for Cicrich, who captured a total of five

medals in various masters events. At the season-ending event, which took place in Kelowna, British Columbia, Cicrich teamed with Gary Helmkay of Toronto, Ontario. The team finished runner-up in the mixed 55-plus division.

Early Birds Offer Smoothies with a Twist Friday, Aug. 13

here is no better way to make sure Friday, Aug. 13 is a lucky day than to start it with a fun new game and a refreshing smoothie. Mr. and Ms. Early Bird 2009, Ron Gotcher and Linda Opray, invite all early risers to their bocce and smoothies party Friday, Aug. 13 from 5:45-6:45 a.m. at the bocce courts in the North Park Blocks. These Early Birds know how to teach the centuries-old Italian game of bocce ball, which is a cross between bowling and croquet. They also concoct delicious smoothies with a cooling blend of bananas, raspberries, yogurt and apple juice, or Chardonnay wine for those who prefer a really elegant smoothie. The bocce courts are between NW Hoyt and NW Glisan streets and NW 8th and NW Park avenues. No reservations are necessary. Cicrich’s world badminton tour started in October at the World Masters Games in Sydney, Australia. The World Masters Games are held every four years and is the largest multi-sport competition in terms of participants. Cicrich joined more than 800 other badminton players at the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre, which was also host to the 2000 Summer Olympics badminton competition.


Competing for the team known as the Canucks, Cicrich took home the gold in women’s 55-year-old team competition. She also paired with Dommeyer in the women’s 55-year doubles competition to take the bronze.
