A THRILLER SHOW

August starts with a Thriller of a show. ‘Man in the Mirror’ takes to the stage on July 3-7 showcasing the biggest hits of Michael Jackson in a high-octane criminally smooth spectacular. The show – which features a cast of Broadway performers – opened to rave reviews in Canada and is crossing the Atlantic for a handful of UK performances including a week at the Theatre Royal. It’s going to be big-budget with some fantastic dance numbers and superb stage effects, and is guaranteed to Rock Your World. Shamone! Get a glimpse behind the scenes of Norwich Theatre Royal for free when it holds its open day on Saturday August 28 from 10-4. You can have a look inside the star dressing rooms, walk onto the stage, and even have a go at using the lights and sound system, and it won’t cost you a penny. The month ends with a Seventies spectacular as Dancing Queen opens on Tuesday August 31 running to Saturday September 4. The show comes form the creators of Man In The Mirror and Tap Dance Fever, and celebrates the biggest hits of the pop legends Abba. It features top dancers and singers, beautiful costumes and dazing choreography giving a Broadway- style spin to big hits like Money Money Money, Fernando, Voulez Vous and Take A Chance. Add in some Seventies party classics and big tunes from Saturday Night Fever, and the audience is in for a party night to remember. A SPACE HOP

With school holidays in full flow, libraries in Norfolk are gearing up to encourage children to keep reading over the summer with an outer space-themed challenge. Space Hop, the twelfth annual Summer Reading Challenge, will run in all Norfolk County Council-run libraries including mobile libraries throughout the holidays. Children who are taking part are asked to read any six books during the summer and receive stickers and other rewards for each stage of the challenge they complete. Those who read all six books receive a medal at the end of the summer, with many being given out in special ceremonies and school assemblies.

Nearly 100 Space Hop events will be held in libraries across the county throughout the school holidays, including rocket-making activities and space-themed story times, and all of the events are free to attend. Space Hop is aimed at six to 11-year-olds but children who do not fall into this age bracket and want to take part are encouraged to sign up as well. Last year, more than 12,500 Norfolk children took part in the challenge! To take part in the Summer Reading Challenge, children and parents can go along to any library in Norfolk to receive a Space Hop pack and be given information about events and activities planned over the summer. BRIT TALENT AND BOOGALOO AT NAC

August may be calming down at the Norwich Arts Centre, but as always with the city’s much loved venue, it’s quality not quantity that it’s known for. This month is no exception as they welcome Leddra Chapman and Al Lewis to the Centre on Tuesday 10th August. With heartfelt and honest lyrics that come straight from her delicate soul, Leddra Chapman is one of the most gifted young songwriters and vocalists in Britain today. This summer promises to be just as busy as the last as Leddra embarks on shows throughout the UK. Also at the NAC, the cabaret night that’s fast becoming an instant sell-out, No Strings brings its Boogaloo Show on Saturday August 21st. The dazzling burlesque club night features Chrys Columbine and Kitty Bang Bang, plus DJ JazzLord and friends, who’ll have the joint jumpin’ to hot Rhythm & Blues, Ska, Calypso and more. Plus walkabout from Hocus Pocus Theatre and The Norfolk Brawds, hot roller derby girls!
