NBAF 2010
INTERVIEW
on new acts and establishing Lucy’s very own Burlesque and Cabaret club – No Strings – which takes place every other month at the Norwich Puppet Theatre. Most recently Lucy has taken No Strings down to London and organises a monthly Wednesday night at Proud Cabaret. We have also been teaching Burlesque for Hen parties and have done some Burlesque-o- grams!!
HOT BOPPIN’ GIRLS W
hen last year’s Norwich Body Art Festival opened its doors, it also
opened the eyes of the public to the scintillating local talent that bubbles through the region. Six perfectly prim and pretty feet ushered their way onto the stage for the weekend and left a lasting impression on eyes, minds and lenses as we became privy to the world of the Hot Boppin’ Girls, who we’re delighted to announce are returning this year. We caught up with the girls ahead of the festival to chat about their Burlesque buzz…
For those that haven't been privy to the scintillating world of Hot Boppin' Girls, what do you do? The Hot Boppin’ Girls offer a delicious mix of comedy theatre, burlesque, bops with mops and tongue-in-cheek, pin-up tease - all set to the finest selection of authentic vintage music.
You all have pseudonyms - Lady Penelope Muck, Dolly Bird & Miss
Dotty Divine - how close are you to your characters? Ellie is scarily close to her alter ego Lady Penelope Muck and aspires to a life which is a combination of Nigella Lawson’s and Kirstie Allsop’s. She enjoys nothing more than whipping up a batch of delicious cupcakes! Lucy and Hannah are (thankfully) rather different to Dolly and Dotty and run successful businesses as well as performing.
You were London Burlesque Festival Prize Winners last year - what did the accolade mean to you girls? It was a fabulous experience and a real honour.
You appeared at the 1st NBAF - did you have a good time? We had a brilliant time! We had our picture taken with lots of lovely people and were even photographed for a couple of body art magazines.
We're delighted to have you back again this year, but what's been happening in the meantime? We have been very busy working
We spy a couple of tattoos on your own bodies... how do you think burlesque and body art go together? They go hand in hand. Many burlesque performers are tattooed and I think they use this; along with the burlesque performing as a form of artistic self expression. Body art also feeds into the retro/vintage aspect of burlesque with many performers sporting traditional and vintage style tattoos.
You're heavily involved in the Norwich cabaret scene, which is growing in strength and notoriety - what do you think of Norwich's scene? The Norwich scene is going from strength to strength and increasingly attracts large and varied audiences to see high quality local and international acts. This reflects the general resurgence in burlesque and interest in cabaret and makes it a really exciting time to be a performer. Lucy’s company, Hocus Pocus Theatre, are experts in providing walkabout performance and tongue in cheek cabaret acts and creating bespoke performances for vintage club and cabaret nights.
Hot Boppin’ Girls will be appearing as part of Sunday’s line-up at the Norwich Body Art Festival. For tickets, go to
