NBAF 2010
INTERVIEW
TRANSMUTANTS Kitty De’lux
more than a bit delicious, it could well be the legs of Kitty De’lux as she brings her stilt walking creatures to Norwich’s city centre. Kitty is co-founder and member of Transmutants, a posse of peculiar performers that enhance any alternative gathering. Not only will they be walking tall around the area, we are thrilled, and a little nervous that they’re also bringing their Japanese Stunt Show to the line-up of entertainment – a spectacle to get your heart and mind racing. Before the festival gets underway, we’ve asked Kitty for a little of her time to talk Transmutants…
If
You are part of a collective of multi-skilled performers, Transmutants, but I wondered who initially formed the collective? Myself (Kitty De'lux), Adam Anarchy and the unforgettable Mad Allen.
How have you recruited performers in the past? Mainly word of mouth, but it's rare
you see something lurking outside St Andrew’s Hall on the weekend of NBAF - dark, imposing and
that you haven't met or worked with performers before somewhere... it's like having a big freakish family!
You have a number of different shows, from stilt walking, to aerial shows, angle grinding and fire shows, but what do you specialise in Kitty, and what's your favourite? I specialise in Stilt Walking and fire performance, but like most performers I have my fingers in lots of pies. My favourite is the stilt walking; I love making the costumes and getting creative, I also love people’s reactions to you when you’re on them!
You must've taken Transmutants to a huge range of different events, but which have proved the most exciting, or bizarre? Festivals for me personally are great; it's a way of life, all camped with fellow performers, you get to meet new people and see those that you might not have seen/worked with in over a year.
You're bringing the Japanese Stunt Show to NBAF - what can our audience expect? Jaw hanging excitement and being
a little bit grossed out too! Not for the squeamish!
You've worked with some huge companies in the past, like Sony, Nokia, Channel 4 etc - have you ever stepped back and thought, 'Wow, look how far we've come?' We always look back and think that! It just keeps going too! The question we ask now is “what's next?”
What are your personal views on body art? Haha, have you seen the state of Mad Allen?!
Are you looking forward to the festival? We can't wait! The venue looks awesome! We might even get some new ink while we're there…!
Transmutants promise “a laboratory of site specific junk art installation, curious cabaret, clowns, circus freaks, unusual entertainment, burlesque beauties, a whole garden of delights and a post- apocollective experience to take you on a journey to the end of the world and beyond.” Go to
