n a summer of lackluster blockbusters and weak comedies, arcade retro inspired comedy Scott Pilgrim vs. the World could well be the surprise sleeper hit of the summer. Based on a 6-part
series of comic books from Brian Lee O’Malley, Scott Pilgrim… is low on plot but high on style and delivery. Directed by our very own Edgar Wright (Spaced, Shaun of the Dead, and Hot Fuzz) the film is an infectious mash-up riot of colour, comedy, action, kung fu, fantasy and romance all filmed under a hallucinogenic faze. Pilgrim (played with usual deft awkwardness by Michael Cera) is a 23-year old slacker bass player in the band Sex Bob-omb (actual songs by Beck) who meets the girl of his dreams in Ramona Flowers, except Ramona has baggage in the

form of her exes and Pilgrim must defeat each of the evil exes in order to win a date. Structured like a videogame with each evil ex acting as an end of level boss (complete with special powers and effects-heavy fight sequences) the film is truly the finest videogame adaptation ever, without being based on an actual videogame! Densely populated with a variety of filmic tricks, from split-screens, soundscapes, comic book graphics and an ADD-style sensibility bombarding the senses, it can be assured that you wont see many movies with such a style as Scott Pilgrim. Those looking for a character-driven teen romance will be disappointed, but just like most teenagers, it’s all about being cool and stylish and Scott Pilgrim has that in spades.
