“Pork pies. Vodka and mixer.”
You’ve just started your final tour, how’s it going so far? It's going so well. We have had the nicest response from the crowds and fans. Because it's our potential 'last tour', a lot of dedicated fans are road tripping out to the dates to see us, which is really touching.
So where exactly are you both for the tour right now then? We're writing to you from Bristol, the 3rd date, before setting off for Leeds this morning. The dates have been really good so far; we were very specific about where we wanted to play on this tour so we picked all our favorite towns and promoters.
You’ve just released EP ‘Ebony and Ivory’, and are enjoying a successful tour, but despite that have decided to call an ‘indefinite hiatus’ on the band. Tell us what brought you both to this big decision to call it a day at this point in the bands success? Announcing our indefinite hiatus was sad for both of us as, as you put, we are so proud of our new EP and the great shows we've been playing this last year. We put in so much hard work into Violet Violet; we book all of our tours, do all the press and PR, merchandise and manage ourselves. After years of this we are still struggling to take the next step up the ladder. Cheri studies French and Fliss does a lot of Art and we have always had to put that to one side for the band, but now, for the time being, we have decided it's time to put some of our other ambitions first.
With this being your farewell tour, let’s reminisce shall we… What’s the best tour you girls have done to date? We have done many-a tour with the 80s Punk band The Nightingales, in Germany, UK and America. They are always pretty eventful as the Nightingales do indeed know how to drink! A few highlights have included: Random German girls the Nightingales pick up from shows that are just put into our car for the
rest of the tour; a drunken supporter in Berlin decided to get on stage next to Cheri and get naked; Cheri got punched on stage at a show in London by accident as a brawl kicked off at the side of the stage... classy gig; Fliss locked in the toilet of Frankfurt for the entire night; We played a squat in Leipzig where the toilet was covered in blood; Stayed in a squat in Amsterdam where above our beds was a charming little welcome banner which said 'Be a Terrorist not a Tourist'.
With this being your last tour, what are the things you’ll miss about each other? Touring and performing every night, meeting so many lovely people and promoters and new fans. We've played so many great support slots with The Slits, Blood Red Shoes and Fuzzbox, but they will just be great memories. I (Fliss) will miss Cheri in general as she is off to Paris for the year.
Who’s the creative eye and driving force behind the themes of your music videos, design of your single and album artwork? Fliss does all the artwork for the band and we are both very particular and precious about our image and videos. The theme of '…Young and Fresh Boned' video was taken from our amazing photos we did with A. J. Sayer in the woods and we took inspiration from both of each other’s hobbies, Cheri - cooking and Fliss - taxidermy.
Moustache or no moustache…? Moustache… beard.
On your many travels and tour, what’s the oddest sight you’ve seen?
Rob (lead singer of the Nightingales) on the floor of the 100 Club mid-set whilst we sung all the vocals from the crowd whilst the musicians carried on playing.
When you’re on tour, what’s on your rider list? Pork pies. Vodka and mixer. Beers. In
Germany, however, the riders they offer are insane and we'll get a great spread of meat and cheese waiting for us backstage with a free bar which does lead to a bit of an interesting night…
Talking of riders and comforts away from home, is there anything from home both of you just can’t do without and always take along with you? Our priority is mainly a good selection of shoes on tour. However, for this tour we have set the task of only wearing black and white (in the theme of the EP) so less shoes are needed. One thing we can't do our road trips without are our faithful Incubus albums.
With the end being nigh, do you think you’d ever re-collaborate or is it time for you both to work on different projects? As we have stated, it is a hiatus so we are not closing the door on Violet Violet, but for the time being we'll be focusing on our different projects... baking pies and stuffing animals.
And finally ladies, before our wave goodbye, what are the bands famous last words? Come to our last farewell gig at the Puppet Theatre in Norwich - tickets from UEA Box Office - no tickets on the door. We'd love our fine city’s support on our last show.
