The home has been restored to its period condition and contains furnishings and artifacts that depict early Breckenridge life. 970-453-9022 Barney Ford House Museum - 111 East Washington Ave. This 1882 Victorian home in downtown Breckenridge was recently restored as a tribute to Barney L. Ford. Ford was the son of a Virginia slave who escaped via the Underground Railroad and achieved success in Breckenridge and throughout the west as a prominent businessman, civic leader, black rights advocate, and mine owner. Open Tuesday – Sunday, 11 a.m.-4p.m., $5 suggested donation. 970-453-5761 Edwin Carter 1875 Museum – 111 North Ridge Street. Tour Edwin Carter’s 1875 museum. Known as the “log cabin naturalist,” Edwin Carter came to Breckenridge as a miner during the gold rush. He quickly recognized the impact of mining on the local wildlife and dedicated his life to preservation. The museum was his home and workshop, and contains specimens from his collection, which became one of the foundations for the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. See an original human powered ladder as well as equipment and uniforms from the first companies. Historic Walking Tour of Downtown Breckenridge – Tuesday – Wednesday 11am at the Breckenridge Welcome Center, $10 for adults, $5 for children, 970 453 9767 Iowa Hill Hydraulic Mine - Airport Road (approximately .9 miles off of Park Avenue). Park at the trailhead and follow the interpretive signs that guide visitors on a moderate one-mile loop through the park. The signs describe the hydraulic process that was used by miners to extract rich gold from the gulches. The park contains many remnants of the operation as well as a miner’s boardinghouse. 970-453-9022. Guided hikes take place on Saturdays at 10am, $10 for adults, $5 for children Valley Brook Cemetery - Airport Road at Valley Brook. The historic Victorian cemetery dates back to 1882. The preserved gravestones and ornate iron gates contains some of the earliest art and written history in Breckenridge. A prominent entry gateway symbolizes the “earthly gate to paradise” and provides a separation from the outside world. It is a park-like setting and a notable wildlife and bird sanctuary. Visitors are asked to be considerate as the cemetery is still an active burial ground for the Town and the individual fences and gravestones are fragile artifacts that memorialize loved ones. 970-453-9022 Washington Gold & Silver Mine – 465 Illinois Gulch Rd. Walk underground and learn to pan for gold, Tuesday – Sunday 1pm, $10 for adults, $5 for children Lomax Placer Mine – 301 Ski Hill Road (approximately .9 miles off of Park Avenue). Look inside a cabin, see and touch original mining equipment, learn to pan for gold, Tuesday – Sunday 3pm $10 for adults, $5 for children French Gulch Guided Hike – B&B Trailhead – See relics from Breckenridge’s mining era, Thursday 10am , $10 for adults, $5 for children Wilderness Hike – Breckenridge Welcome Center, Thursday 10am fron June 10 - August 26, $12 per person Breckenridge Sunday Market – Main Street Station, Sundays from 9am – 2pm June 20- September 12
