Hut Trips - Two hut organizations, the Summit Huts & Trails Association (SHTA) and the 10th Mountain Division Trail Association, present a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the central Rockies backcountry in fine style. The SHTA, founded in 1987 has a series of three cabins that are accessible primarily by cross-country skiing or snowshoeing in the winter. The 10th Mountain Division Hut Association, a nonprofit organization created in 1980, is based on the European tradition of hut-to-hut travel. Consisting of 22 huts, the system provides shelter for experienced backcountry enthusiasts. Reservations are required for both SHTA and 10th Mountain Huts. These cabins which accommodate groups up to 16 have been built largely through volunteer labor and feature such amenities as saunas, libraries, kitchen facilities, comfortable sleeping quarters and, importantly, composting toilets. Hut users melt snow for water in the winter and collect water from streams in the summer. Name
