flouting of seat-belt laws –all seen as key factors inEUroad safety. “One hundred people die every dayon


Europe’sroads,” saidEUtransport commissioner Siim Kallas.“We have made good progress since 2001 and we have succeeded in saving nearly 80,000 lives.


“But the number of fatalities and


injuries on our roads is still unacceptable. “Weare looking at what kind of cars


motorists drive, wherethey drive and how they drive, and we want to cut road deaths in half by 2020.” Thecommissioner was unveiling a


“road safety action programme” which will include proposals on tougher car and lorry safety standards,the development of “intelligent” vehicles and the building of safer roads. Latest statistics showthe levelofroad deaths across Europe has dropped by 36


per cent in the last decade -35per cent in the UK, from61 road accident fatalities per million people in 2001 to 38 per million last year. EUroad deaths in 2009 topped 35,000 -


the equivalent of amedium-sized town, the Commission pointed out. And forevery death on the roads there


arefour permanentlydisabling injuries – suchasbrain or spinal damage –10 serious injuries and 40 minor injuries.

scored 97 per cent in this category in contrast to the cars at the bottom of the satisfaction table, with the RenaultLaguna scoring only51per cent and the Renault Espace last of all with just 48 per cent. TheKia Picanto topped


the tablefor newcar reliability (nought to three years) in the supermini sector,with the SeatIbiza bottom of the list.The Mazda3was considered the bestmediumcar fornewcar reliability,with the Nissan Qashqai bottom. In the largecar sector,


the most reliablewas the HondaInsight, with the FordMondeobottom of this particular table. Themost reliableluxury


carwastheMercedes-Benz E-class,with the VolkswagenGolf Plus the best in the multi-purpose vehicle sector; the Toyota RAV4the most reliable4x4 or sports utility vehicle.
