BMWemissions ad ruled ‘misleading’ to consumers

ABMWcampaign claiming lowlevels of CO2 emissions has been ruled misleading to consumers, awatchdoghas said. Theregional press ad was headlined

‘Joy makes the most of every drop’, and went on to read: “So youcan steponthe accelerator, knowing Joywill minimise the CO2 emissions” and“BMW EfficientDynamics,Less emissions,More driving pleasure.” Thesmall print said fuel economy

figures forthe Z4 sDrive 35is Roadster put CO2 emissions at 210g/km. Twopeople complained thatthe ad

implied the levelof210 g/km was low, when they understood it to be relatively high.

BMWsaid the car replaced the previous

Z4 Roadster and had decreased CO2 levels despite increased performance. Thecompanyadded thatthe car

produced the lowest CO2 emissions compared with its competitors. TheAdvertising Standards Authority

said readers were likelytoassume that BMW’sclaims were acomparison against all cars. It noted thatGovernment fuel economy

bandings classified vehicles AtoM depending on their CO2 emissions with bandAbeing the lowest and the car in

BMW’sadinband K. TheASA said: “Because an emission

rate of 210 g/km was relatively high for anycar, despite being lowerthan BMW’s previous model and some competitors’

similar specification vehicles,we concluded thatthe ad was likelytomislead without further qualification.” It ruled thatthe ad should not appear again in its current form.
