Secure parking in Parramatta John Holstein CAMWEST*

secure bikes within the cage. Showers and toilets have been built to a very high standard and are only accessible by swipe card access. This facility should become a

showcase for end of trip facilities for bicycle riders and has the potential to encourage a range of people to cycle to Parramatta, secure in the knowledge they can shower before work or going for other appointments and leave their bike in a safe environment. There is a modest cost of $20.00 per

month involved and at present the first month is free. This will allow access to the facility 24/7. 

OVER 30 PEOPLE gathered at

Parramatta’s Horwood Place Carpark on Thu 15 July 2010 to witness the opening of the Western Sydney’s first secure bicycle parking to be retro fitted to a car park. A joint venture between Parramatta

City Council and Secure Parking has resulted in 42 bicycle parking spaces being made available to bicycle riders in Parramatta. The Council secured Federal funding to help build the parking cages and to renovate two sets of toilets to provide showers, toilets, lockers and change facilities in their Horwood Place and Erby Place Car parks. The facility was officially opened by

Parramatta’s Lord Mayor Paul Garrard who stated “The provision of these new facilities, along with the completion of the missing links in the Parramatta Cycleway network is part of Council’s goal to have 5% of the population riding to work by 2021 and help create a greener City”. Vice President of Bicycle NSW,

Richard Birdsey also welcomed the new facility which reinforces Parramatta City Council’s resolve to support cycling in Western Sydney and its potential to greatly improve cycling accessibility to Parramatta. Master of Ceremonies and Chair

person of both Parramatta Cycleways Committee and CAMWEST, John Holstein welcomed the construction of the facility and thanked Parramatta Councillors for their support of issues relating to cycling in Parramatta. Parramatta is one of the few Western Sydney Councils with a dedicated Cycling Advisory Committee. The facility was constructed to a

first class standard by Graeme Roth of Bikestorage.com.au and features swipe card access, vandal and burglar proof mesh cages, individual lockers and both hanging and loop type racks to further

3km long “missing link” Harbourlink Russ Webber NSBG THE RTA HAS budgeted $1.363

million this financial year to construct a 1.3 km long SUP (shared user path) along the Warringah Freeway. This will result in nearly half of

HarbourLink / the 3km long “missing link” between the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Naremburn being completed within the next 12 months. Works are expected to involve a bi-

directional SUP adjacent to and along the length of the Miller St entry ramp extending adjacent to the freeway’s northern shoulder past the Cammeray Golf Course, proceeding beneath Ernest and Falcon Streets then connecting to the Ridge St bridge over the freeway. It is essential that the connection to this bridge is largely level, otherwise cyclists and pedestrians will face a very steep climb. At the western end, construction is

proceeding on the $10M bus layover with parking for 33 buses. When these works are completed, most cyclists will use Amherst St, this being recently signposted as an eastbound by-pass due to the construction of the bus layover. Further west, the RTA’s contractors

have been drilling 7 exploratory holes between Brook St and West St prior to the future construction of an SUP bridge over the Brook St entry ramp. This will then extend beneath West St and Miller St together with an underpass of the Miller St entry ramp. On completion this facility will connect to the existing 7.5 km long SUP that extends along the Gore Hill Freeway corridor, then Epping Rd (Lane Cove) through to Wicks Rd at North Ryde. South from Ridge St, we are wanting
