How SELECT made it “One for the Road”
As our programme of road shows takes a summer break, now seems like a very good time to pause and take stock, in order to reflect on what has gone before.
The road shows provide Members with another chance to access information from technical updates to SJIB queries and everything in between. Feedback from attendees has shown that they value the chance to have informal one to one chats about issues affecting their business and also to be able to meet the people at the other end of the phone. The programme of road shows began in
Hamilton in April where 46 delegates representing 31 different Member companies turned up to hear Technical Manager Bob Cairney’s presentation on Periodic Inspections. Bob was ably backed by the rest of the
road show team, namely Dave Forrester, Elaine Ellis, Fiona Harper, Fiona Cornwall, Michelle Lockie and Martin Reid. Each took it in turn to explain the range of services available to Members and to give an update on some of the issues SELECT have been dealing with, on behalf of our Members, over the past year.
Since then we have staged a further
nine road show events in locations ranging from Dumfries in the south to Lerwick in the north. All these events have been strongly
attended, so much so that when the programme is due for completion in mid September we expect to have met 400 people representing nearly 250 Member companies across Scotland. Although the events are designed to pass on generic information we have also been able to help Members with specific issues ranging from holiday credits to Local Authorities and public sector Pre- Qualification Questionnaires. SELECT’s Employment Affairs
department covered issues such as the
new “fit note”, contracts of employment, wage rates and grading while Elaine Ellis updated attendees on the new training courses available this year. One of those courses, on “Emergency Lighting” was developed as a direct result of Member feedback from last years road shows. Elaine also pointed out that over the last year SELECT has trained 5,000 operatives and finally, she also passed on the good news that this year SELECT will be giving a free training place to every Member company. Keep your eye out for your training voucher coming through the post sometime soon. As mentioned,
we have had overwhelmingly positive feedback from those who attended the roadshows, which is always gratifying as well as confirming that we are definitely doing a good job. There are still
two road shows to come; they are in Oban on 13th September and Stornoway on the 14th. We’ve had a few

interesting suggestions from Members as to how we go forward with the road shows, but the planned
amendments to the Wiring Regulations due to come into effect early next year almost certainly give us a ready made technical subject for future presentations. We would like to thank those of you who have attended a road show and gave us a warm welcome in the process. Many thanks for your feedback. Details about the events in Oban and
Stornoway can be found on this month’s training page. If you would like to attend either road show (or indeed, both) road shows please contact Elaine Ellis at
