Info: 01970 623232 (Aber Arts) / 01446 799100 (St Donats) In these listings, as in presumably every publication across the nation that lists stage productions, there is often a surfeit of Shakespeare – attempted by every level of acting from the most ragtag village hall assembly to the world-renowned Royal Shakespeare Company. However, even the latter of these can’t claim as direct a hotline to the legacy of the Bard as Shakespeare’s Globe, which is the theatre company based in the playhouse of the same name. The building, based in Southwark, is a faithful reconstruction of the one most closely associated with performances of Shakespeare’s plays between 1599, when it was built, and 1613, when it burned down. The 21st-century incarnation of the Globe takes its plays out on tour, in the manner of the original (“It was with great pride that we resurrected the British touring tradition in summer 2007 after a 400-year break,” artistic director Dominic Dromgoole has commented), and in August this part of the world gets treated to The Comedy Of Errors twice. One of the first plays Shakespeare penned, coming together some time between 1592 and 1594, it’s fairly typical of his work of that period – a comedy, obviously, and one especially reliant on farce, slapstick and punnage (the plot is roughly adapted from two comedies by Roman playwright Plautus). This, along with its relatively short running time, makes it (along with A Midsummer Night’s Dream) a good entry point for getting kids ‘into’ Shakespeare. No doubt the audience on these two dates will be peppered with parents attempting to do just that with their progeny. The St Donats show holds something of an advantage here, as it’s in the castle grounds, and attendees are encouraged to bring a pic- nic to sate themselves with prior to the Elizabethan japery.
