August school holidays are here again!! I will be patrolling all the school sites over the holidays but would ask that any residents that live near to schools please contact us if they see anything or anyone suspicious on the school grounds. Regular patrols of the paddling pools will also be carried out.

I was called to an unofficial leaving party of Year 11 Mark Hall leaver’s on Old Harlow Cricket ground and the Norman Booth Sports Centre play area during the day. I’m afraid I was a bit of a party pooper as all the youths were underage so alcohol had to be seized and tipped away!! Most of the youngsters were just trying to have a good time exchanging photos and writing messages on school shirts but there are always those few that spoil it for the rest. I issued some black refuse bags to the group and asked that they pick up all their rubbish which they left all bagged up for the groundsman by mid afternoon so I would like to say a big thank you to those youths concerned.

I attended the New Hall Family Fun Day on July 24th and am very pleased to say that New Hall now has a Neighbourhood Watch Group and hope that many more residents of New Hall will take an active part. I am pleased to say that Councillor Muriel Jolles will also be present at the Ward Surgery held at Old Harlow Library on the 3rd Saturday of the month so I look forward to many more of you dropping in.

Surgery Dates: Saturday 21st August 10:30 - 12:00 at Old Harlow Library, High Street, Old Harlow together with Councillor Muriel Jolles.

Harlow Common PCSO’s Rebecca Durrant & Jason Hardy •

I wanted to give some practical guidance this month on keeping yourself and your property safe. Recently there has been and increase in burglaries in Harlow and we have also found an increase in bogus callers. Here are some tips on how you can help protect your home:

• •

• •

Always close and lock the external doors and windows – even if you are just going out for a short time. Try to get into the habit of double-checking window and door locks when you are going to bed too. Have you turned the key on the doors that may have been unlocked during the day? Be careful with keys. Make sure you all know how to get out in case of a fire, but be careful not to leave keys, including spares, near the door or where they could be reached from outside. And try not to leave them in a garage or under a flowerpot! On older windows, you can add window locks to help stop people getting in (a burglar is less likely to break in if they have to smash a window). Use deadlocks for doors to make them more secure.

• •

Burglar alarms that are visible, good home and lighting and security lighting in the right places can put burglars off. But make sure that lights don’t disturb your neighbours and that burglar alarms turn off after 20 minutes. Timers are good. Use timers to switch on lights and radios when you are away from home. Burglars will think twice because there might be someone at home. Lock garages and sheds. Never leave garages or sheds unlocked, especially if they are connected to your property.

All these valid points and more can be found in the ‘Be Safe, Be Secure’ booklet which you can pick up at your local beat surgeries.

Surgery Date: Thursday 1st July 10:00 - noon at the Potter Street Community Centre.
