Today, Del Mar is among the nation’s elite tracks in terms of it’s daily average attendance, which is around 17,000 per day and totals over 635,000 fans during the 37-day summer season. Two years later, on Opening Day, Del Mar unveiled its completed $80-million grandstand. This state of the art complex has won awards and doubled its capacity. In 1996, the infamous horse, Cigar, comes to Del Mar for the 6th Pacific Classic and a chance to mark the history books with a record 16 straight wins. In Del Mar’s largest crowd ever - 44,181 - Cigar is defeated by a 40-1 underdog, Dare and Go. As recently as 2009, the Track’s simulcast signal was sent to more than 1,000 locations throughout the Western Hemisphere from Canada to Argentina.
