HIGH LIFETIME PRODUCTION FROM BRITISH FRIESIAN

Bill Foster of Genus ABS takes a look at the British Friesian families that are delivering what every milk producer is looking for – high lifetime production

he main aim of Friesian breeders around the country is to breed a cow that will produce a large volume of milk over many years – lifetime production is the key to profi tability, rather than breeding a cow that only lasts two or three lactations. To achieve this, the cow needs to be trouble free and easy to get in calf; and the British Friesian has an excellent reputation for these traits.

T The ‘gold standard’ for lifetime production is 100 tonnes of milk and the

fi rst British cow to achieve this was Manningford Faith Jan Graceful in 1949. She eventually set a world record lifetime yield (at the time) of 148 tonnes. I also remember visiting John Waring’s Winton herd in Yorkshire during the 1970s to see Winton Pel Eva 2 that had set a new record. She gave more than 160 tonnes and was a tremendous old cow. Over the years, a lot of bulls bred from 100 tonne cows have been used widely and some examples are listed below:

Top bulls of all time A look at the All Time Top 10 list of Friesian bulls with widespread UK proofs shows that high producing cows with good longevity breed the best proven bulls for Profi table Lifetime Index (PLI).

Blackisle Glen Albyn (PLI £125, Type Merit 2.7) is bred from the Hunday Bertha family and his pedigree includes two 100 tonne cows; Hunday Bertha BFE and Bourtie Beatrice 24 BFE. Deangate Centurion (PLI £122, Type Merit +1.8) is out of Deangate Cindy 13 BFE90 that gave 94 tonnes. Lakemead Rancher (PLI £107, Type Merit +1.1) is bred from two generations of 90 tonne cows and his dam was classifi ed BFE four times.
